Series 3 v12 engine and gearbox refit
#1 Series 3 v12 engine and gearbox refit
Please can anyone give some good advice with refiting engine and gearbox to a v12 s3 roadster... I.e from top or bottom ... together or apart and is it easier to leave certain bits off of the engine etc. Doing for a customer on an immaculate car that I don’t want to damage!! Many thanks. Ad.

It goes in from the front, leave off alternator and to be safe carbs/manifold. Unlike other E Types the top rail of the picture frame is removable. Straightforward fit.

As mentioned from the front/top - if you use the correct length chains (check manual for this) from your engine hoist you just need to lift the rear of the gearbox over the steering rack and the rest goes straight in.

Are they both out now ? If so , you can drop engine in by itself, then attach bell housing , gearbox, etc., once engine in. Lots of discussion on this subject under Series 3. Trick will be to shorten driveshaft, and replace removed section with telescopic piece, and re balance shaft. About $100US. Future clutch changes , for example, become a half day exercise.
