Post by Cookie S1 2+2 » Wed Jan 30, 2019 11:32 am

Hi
I am a new member and owner of a series 1 2+2 . It is drivable but in need of a great deal of TLC. I am looking to engine rebuild ,respray and restore over the next few years but would like to get it roadworthy for the summer.
I am looking to make contact with some fellow E-type enthusiasts to compare notes and look at our cars !!!
Happy to talk on phone if you message me back .

Welcome to the Forum. Suggest you put your name down for the Moss Jaguar open day in April as you will meet a lot of Forum members and see quite a few cars: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13384

And if you are ever going to be in Hertfordshire/bucks boarder (hideous Hemel Hempstead area) let me know....happy to meet and compare notes....they are always in need of TLC even if it is just polishing and admiring!!!

Hi All
Thank-you all for welcoming me .
Let me tell you my story so far , I bought my beloved car last year .A 1967 S1-2+2 ,the same age as me !!!
I left the car at the place i bought it , then this year i had it taken to an E-type Garage , where they got it running better.
So I picked my car up to drive it home, 4.5 hours away . So I got half hour down the road and the temp was ok but the oil pressure was getting low , I stoped in a service station and phoned the garage and they said it may need a oil change so carried on but only got 2 hours down the road and the cams started to sound loud . I stopped on the hard shoulder, the temp had still not moved but when i stopped it went very high .
I phoned relay to get home , not a good first day !
Now the car is home and topped up with oil ! it starts and runs ok but the oil temp after a short time goes low ,
so i am going to take the old oil out and put 10-60 or is it 20-60 ? and see if the oil pressure stays up .
any more ideas what i can do ?

Hi Craig......20/50 is ideal.......drain and replace filter and fill with 8.5 lit....then look on your dipstick to see where the oil level is and mark or note the position.....its not uncommon for dipsticks to be bent slightly and not go straight into the sump but get caught on the baffel and not position correctly......so check its straight and fits in easy......do not be tempted to put any more than the 8.5 lt.....Steve......have sent you a pm

I'm not that good technically, but it does sound to me that there is something more wrong than just wrong amount/type of oil if pressure went down again soon after after topping up. What do you call "low" pressure?

Hi Craig...as Malcom said above.......you need to check your pressure with a mechanical guage..its the only way to see whats going on...look at this thread and the problems untill a mechanical was used ( last few posts) http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13664

Worrying that the pressure went low and cams started rattling. Hopefully just an oil leak so worthwhile checking under the car to see if you are losing any.

By the way Craig, you can buy classic old 20:50 at Halfords in gallon cans.

Get in touch with Classic Oils at Bicester Heritage centre. They do a wide range of 20W50 oils and will be cheaper than Halfords.....

My local Halfords doesn't hold mineral oil in stock any more - you have to order it in.
Wilco also do a classic car oil, which you also have to order in. But it is £5 a gallon cheaper.

Opie oils is a good source for all kinds of oils and other fluids. They're great if you want to buy in bulk if you have maybe more than one classic.
