#1 E type full build S1 4.2 Coupe

Post by phoenix » Sun Oct 25, 2020 12:15 pm

Hi I am a new member looking for help . I have built from scratch a few British cars and one French ( Fiat 500) and I have now taken on a job for some one else. It is building from scratch a 1965 Jaguar S1 E type. It is completely disassembled and not quite complete. I have the shell and engine fully refurbed and a big pile of bits. The rear suspension drive unit is ready and hopefully going in this Tuesday with help .Then onto front suspension which has some expensive bits missing yet. After that I was thinking of putting wheels on and tilting and propping up to do the brake fuel lines and maybe exhaust. If any one has any other ideas please shout up. This car is on a mezzanine level so the engine will have to go in when on ground as the shell was lifted up with a fork lift. I have a lot of brackets to identify if its ok to put them on here. This is going to take me sometime as I am only doing part time . Over 70 .

Hello Phoenix, do you have a name instead of just a username? Why not add it to your signature area as well as the car version. It’ll help people address you in a friendly way and know just which car you’re needing help for in future postings.

I use imgur to host photos online then use the link in there to post a photo. Why not search for imgur on here and you’ll see recent advice from someone more technical than me at showing just where and how to do it.

There are many restoration threads you can look through to give you very good ideas as well as books and the excellent online blog by Chris Vine showing his restoration diary and just how he went about it all, invaluable!

An important point : you must put in the brake and the fuel lines before you put in the rear suspension, as some of the unions are impossible to reach once the rear cage is in position

Hi my name is Bryan . I will try to up load photos now . I know Phoenix is wrongly spelt I stated using it before I realised . I use it because while I was rallying I had two cars catch fire and we only just made it out of one. This car was bought and started some time ago ( 10 + years)then stalled. between garages it has lost some parts .I have cleaned the brackets with it but don't know where they fit so here goes .
No it says files to big so I may have to wait till my son can show me how to reduce definition.

Bryan, if you do get into using imgur it will automatically resize photos, if that helps and your son can help you either set up an account there or use the advice Steve (mgcjag) gave.
Ask away with questions, this is the best place for friendly advice and help for all things E Type

When you click on "post image", you are given the option right at the top to re-size. It probably says initially "do not re-size". If you click on it, you can then choose a different size; I choose "19 inch monitor" and it works well.
Or use imgur as Geoff suggests; I just find it easy to use the above system.

By the way, in terms of what you can do to re-build now, it does depend on how you are going to put the engine in.
Lots on here install the engine from underneath by lifting the front of the car and rolling the engine in on a suitable platform. If you go that way, rather than dropping it in, you obviously wouldn't want to fit the exhaust first as you suggest.

So S1 4.2 E-type as you say - but is it an OTS,FHC or 2+2 ? Is it RHD or LHD - or LHD changing to RHD ? I ask because some of the parts, pipe runs ,wiring etc are very different.

The link on IMGUR Sorry I do not know how to copy the link.
While I am on here ,I was cleaning the carbs and found I could not tighten the tops down on the float chambers. It seems as though the post is to long. All three are exactly the same so it looks like a bit of shortening and rethreading. Has anyone seen this or can explain this ?
Monday I am going to lift up the rear cradle I have borrowed a quad bike lift to help. (I am not in a garage with hoist or ramp).

Thanks Bryan

I did not know they had overflow pipes and yes that will be it. I have had various cars with SU carbs but I have never seen them before.

Hi can anybody out there tell me what kind of header/expansion tank an S1 4.2 RHD E type should have . I have with it one that fits on the bulkhead but most seem to have one on top of the radiator .
Are not these things expensive to build . Bryan

The header tank on S1 4.2 cars is a rectangular unit that sits between the front of the engine and the radiator. Radiator is a cross flow type with side tanks, and there is no separate expansion tank.

If you have a firewall mounted expansion tank, it sounds as if you may have a so called series 1.5 which has the S2 type cooling system: no separate header tank, a vertical flow radiator with top and bottom tanks, and a firewall mounted expansion tank.

A photo of your setup would greatly help with identification of what you actually have.

RHD S1 did not have an expansion tank at any stage as far as I know . I thought that the sealed system came with the S2 - but I suppose the hybrid s1.25 and S 1.5 cars may have had a tank

PS sorry my post crossed with the one above
