#1 Introducing myself

Post by Apprentice1975 » Tue Feb 02, 2021 8:32 am

hello e type forum people,
thank you to the people who run this forum too.!
I am currently trying to restore a series 3 2+2 . 1971.
It has all matching numbers verified with Jaguar Heritage UK.
I bought it about 8 years ago from a dealer in the UK and had it shipped to Australia where I live.
the vehicle is fully stripped down now.
I have built a rotisserie to help me with the restoration.
The body (tub) has been in the rotisserie for about 3 years.
I've fitted new floor pans , boot pan and wheel arch repairs.
My MIG welding is slowly improving ...
I've restored the IRS with new discs, shockers, ushers , hub bearings etc and retired the rear brake callipers with new pistons and seals. The IRS is now ready to fit.
I didn't touch the diff , only removed the cover to inspect the crown wheel teeth which looked ok no sign of wear or damage.
I've stripped and rebuilt the manual gearbox fitting new synchros
The vehicle is painted Signal Red but I can see it was originally Regency Red. I intend to paint it Regency Red as per production.
I've got a new complete front frame as the existing drivers side had a repair which was probably due to an accident during the vehicles life...?
The existing near side, front and picture frame is ok but I decided to purchase a complete frame.
I haven't touched the bonnet yet.
I've been slowly procuring some replacement parts . Torsion bars, exhaust system, etc.
I had the radiator re- cored and have purchased new fan motors.
I haven't touched the engine yet, but I checked compressions prior to removal and they were good, all above 150 psi.
Still loads to do :)
thanks
I'll attach a few pics for now

Welcome to the forum Apprentice, though it'd be nice to have your name otherwise the old f@rts on here will just shout at you demanding you make them a cup of tea and stop dithering about

Not that you've been dithering about by the look of the work you've been doing. Well done and keep up the story of your work. Why not add a restoration thread, it doesn't have to be comprehensive but can tell us how you're progressing.

This is a very friendly and helpful forum, ask questions and you'll soon get help.

Good luck

Hi Malcolm and Geoff,
Thank you for your replies and welcomes.
,,,,,, my name is Colin........
I'll try and put together more info / thread. Once I work out how to create a thread...
Until then, I'd better keep wheeling this broom before the foreman catches me sitting around ,..
Cheers,

Hi Colin,

Welcome, where are you in Aus? I have a similar car, also brought over from UK. I did very similar work, by the sound of it.

As to starting a thread, you have already done that by starting this one. Start a restoration thread in the restoration area and post to it where you have progress to report. Suggest you raise a new thread each time for specific questions, otherwise they can get lost.

Also suggest you edit your profile and include first name, plus E-type model and year in your signature block, then when you ask questions, people know who they are answering and what car to answer questions about. I don’t suggest you put much more information in there, but that’s up to you. A general location helps people to point you in the right direction for specialist help or anything where location matters.

Regards,

Simon.

Hi to all on forum again.....
Just to let you know I'm still here..
My project is on hold at the moment. Renovating a bathroom which became bigger than 'Ben Hur'
I need to get back into my S3, but being in Western Australia and now summer time my metal roof shed / garage is like a sauna and grinding / welding may not be a wise thing to do.
Every time I walk past her, I give her a pat and tell her, "don't worry, I'll be back soon"
I can hear you say, " excuses excuses, just get on with it ..."
Motivational coaching gladly accepted.
Colin

Haha... Hi Colin... I find myself in the same place.... Poor car in the garage ( although not the sauna!)
and I find myself with a long list of "more important" projects.... Mainly house renovations, but by the time I finish a days building work I run out of energy to then get out in the garage... It would be easy to get quite despondent about such things but on the other hand I can look and smile and know it's mine and, like you, keep telling her I will be back one day.... These are not excuses... just real life ...
Keep the faith...

Guy, thank you for your words of encouragement and you read me well.
The despondency can itself be quite a drain.
My view of the S3 restoration has changed from when I first started ripping in to it a few years ago.
I seem to be more philosophical these days.. Its more about the actual journey than the end product, although I would love to feel and hear that big motor purring away in front of me as she opens up down the road.
I joke with myself that by the time its ready to receive the engine , petrol will only be available on the black market and I could risk imprisonment for exceeding my CO2 quota...!

Hello All, Just my two cents worth, but don't wait to long, stuff happens. When i became the caretaker for my Dads 62 OTS i am glad i did not take all apart. I did what i had to do to get it running and for the first couple of years i was able to do it. But in 2016 i was told that i had cancer and that took a year of my life away. It made me think how much time do i have left? Maybe everyone can not do this but i took some my saving for a rainy day and said the hell with it and put into the E-type. So glad i did because it is such a joy to drive. Time is limited we don' know how much we have. The joy of driving that 62 makes the $$$$ spent on it worth every penny. You can't take with you. As i said just my two cents worth RF
