#1 Greetings from Northern California!

Post by mouton » Tue Aug 26, 2008 8:30 pm

Hi! I am Jerry Mouton, from Palo Alto, CA. David Braun (Heuer) pointed this out to us listers of Jag-Lovers. Jag-Lovers is down for a while, and so we thought we'd check this forum out.

My friend had a brother-in-law who let the two of us drive his '63 OTS to high school a few days in 1964, that's how I acquired this disease. I bought my '64 FHC in 1974, as a disreputable used car, for US$1800. I have since restored pretty much every little thing on it, and have agonized over most of the choices any of us will have to make at some point.

The car has been registered in the New York Times Classics section here:

http://collectiblecars.nytimes.com/View ... =COL701041

for photos and history. I also have many photos, including detailed parts locations of this very original car here: http://moutons.org/Jaguar/Photos/

I am currently completing a rework of the head for a burned valve, mainly in the cleaning and polishing phase. Dreading return to the garage, in fact.

I autocross the car (US meaning, see http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2 for a definition). I find the stock E Type can hold its own pretty well against modern sports cars in this sport, though never seriously challenge the best of them. For 44 year old car, it's pretty amazing! And it's widely agreed to be the sweetest handling car out there by those who have driven it.

I run the car in track days too, when I can. And touring the N. California countryside and wineries is exactly what the E Type was designed for.

I am an "as delivered" afficionado, pretty much. I run my factory chrome wires with 185-15 Michelin XVS tires (which I have used since the mid-'70s, not the same set of course ; -) but I also have 6" wide Dayton wheels with 195/50-15 Bridgestone Potenza 01R tires for autocross. These are by far the best street tires I have found, though not suitable for the E Type on the road. Given the high price of XVS over here, I will be going to Vredestein Sprint Classics real soon now.

It's great to join a group dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of our wonderful cars!

Jerry

Jerry, Welcome from another JL lister. Your detailed photos were a great help to me when trying to work out how to finish off the car - a fine resource, thanks.

Thanks, Dave and Andy! Small world, eh?

Dave, glad the photos were of help. I always see more areas that I have not covered...

Jerry

Delighted to see you over here and your input/experiences are most welcome especially your insights into E-Type handling, suspension and tyres. With the way sterling is dropping so fast against the dollar those XVS tyres may suddenly be affordable!

Thanks for the kind welcomes, gentle listers!

Clive, Isn't that XK-EE unbelievable? In fact, I have not yet decided whether to believe it, but I have to admit it was published well before there was a Photoshop.

Happy the photos will be useful, let me know if there is something not photographed and I'll try to add it.

Ginger! See, I told you there was another nice E Type forum to be enjoyed!

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Ginger Corda, good friend of Norman Dewis! And editor of a very popular Jaguar newsletter in Florida. Owner of two very nice E Types, a 3.8 OTS, golden sand and a V12 (color forgotten). Thanks for the video, Ginger, and welcome to the list!

Ginger

Great to have you on the forum - just saw some pictures of you the other day with Norman Dewis taken by Pete Crespin. Incidentally from the videos I have seen Ginger drives her E not only as though she stole it but also as though the former keeper was in hot pursuit!

I've seen photos of Jerry's car on other forums for several years now. This is why there is still a chance my current FHC will be finished in that shade--it just looks good!

Moe,

I can recommend the color, and the red interior provides just the right balance. The shades of "white" have subtle differences, and the cream brings out the shine of the chrome on a sunny day. The blue sky and dark reflections show up so well.

But then there are no really bad color combinations for the E-Type.

Hi Jerry,
Hi Ginger,

I can only join the others in giving you a warm welcome on our little site. Indeed, although we never met in person, I already learned a lot of your contributions and enthusiasm.

It is people like you who somehow manage to make people like me smile and be happy again with my etype choice when I am covered with oil and grease and my fingers are crushed after yet another small seemingly insurmountable hick up with my beloved "E".

cheers
Erik
