Matching numbers are important to some but as long as the car has an E-Type engine it is of little import. The whole "matching numbers" thing came out of the USA and their muscle cars. Because there were so many versions of, say, a Mustang some people were building the rare models from a pile of parts sourced from different cars. Nothing wrong with that as you ended up with a car of similar performance/looks and the hot-rod community had been doing it for years. But as prices took off collectors wanted to be sure they had the real thing so they started checking Factory records as this was the only way they could guarantee originality.
Not a problem with E-Type's as there were no cheap or smaller engined versions from which to create something more valuable. Nice to have the knowledge that the gearbox and engine were those it left the Factory with but given the body, paint, wheels and interior etc will not be as original then why worry. It does give you a good bargaining chip with the vendor though!
