I have never heard of such a thing , and since the autovac method of pumping petrol went out in the 1930s it is unlikely to be that. Where is the "vac tank" ? Perhaps you can post a photo or two using photobucket ?

Hi, what's your name? Probably over the left rear wheel arch.

This should go on the Series 2 forum.

Hi Saloonracer, I have a 69 series 2 and it has a vacuum tank which sits on the left rear wheel arch and is connected to the fuel tank via 3 hoses, some people i have spoken to say its not needed, but i have mine in place

Regards

John.

Welcome. If you have a look on Chrisvine's ( a member on here) build blog there is a description and a bit of an explanation. On the Series 2, this acts as an expansion tank and breather for the fuel tank unlike the earlier cars where there is a vent pipe from the tank back into the filler tube neck and a vented fuel cap.
On the later Series 2 cars, there are 3 small vents from different sections of the main fuel tank that connect to the smaller breather tank you mentioned. This is then vented via a pipe that runs along the left side chassis rail to a charcoal canister in the engine bay that is all part of the emission control set up.
IF you did remove all this, the fuel tank would need to be vented properly, ideally with a two way breather valve.

Ruby, if you look at the dates, saloonracer posted this back in November 2016, it's his only post and he has never responded to or given thanks for the help and advice given

No i hadn't noticed this but thanks for pointing it out certainly tanks are available with the vents but i dont want to clutter it up any more than i have to will try the vent valve and vented fuel cap option as above.

Hi
I have left the tank in place on my 69 series 2 and removed the carbon canister. The pipe to the front of the car, exiting near the brake servo is still in place and does not appear to have any negative effect. I do have a vented fuel cap.
I have not noticed any fuel smells and would have thought vapour would not escape via the front as long as the cap is vented
