#1 Out to buy a Miata !

Post by Durango2k » Sat Sep 14, 2019 10:00 am

... just went out to Hamburg to buy a very early 1990 Miata. Of course the E is still un-painted, because it is very hard to find someone to be brave enough it seems and not be asking silly money for the job.

The Miata is red, comes fully equipped, has a Hardtop, 8 tyres, costs 1500, still MOT‘d, and the plan is to give it to Susanne next spring. And see if it can possibly replace the 21 yr old Smart. It costs the same in taxes and insurance, being 30 yrs old and classified as a classic.

I‘ll have to remove the lowering kit it has, fit a standard steering wheel, and fix one or two rust holes, but it is not a rust bucket as many of them are, especially from 1998 onwards. Has the 1600 engine, 115 horses.

I think it‘ll be a bit of an investment as well, I am pretty sure that as a classified classic value will rise a bit to, say, 4 or 5 tsd next summer.

Earlier this year a friend of mine bought a 2003 one owner MX5 Arizona edition with 60000 miles and full service history with a note book filled with every bit of expenditure, including every petrol purchase, from the day it was new. £3000. What a bargain for such a great car!

I might buy one for my wife

They are bad for rust so check carefully (as is the Honda S2000).

The rear wheel arches are triple skinned and notorious for corrosion at the back of the sills as are the front chassis legs which can crumble away in your hands and are difficult to inspect properly because they are covered.
