2 years ago we replaced a harmonic balancer on a C6.
Aside from being a bugger to get to (either engine out, or disassemble most of the front of the car and lower the front suspension), the official shop manual talks about a rubber washer which goes under the bolt in the end of the crankshaft. It says (and I kid you not) "If the rubber washer was present on removal, do not fit a new one. If none was present on removal, fit one."
Before reading the manual we fitted the new HB, bolt, and washer supplied new from GM. With the rubber washer fitted the HB slipped within about 15 minutes operation - then I found a dealer and asked to read the manual.
Then we bought a new bolt (single use item) and did the whole thing again omitting the rubber washer. The car is still running fine.
Getting access to the nose of the crank took two of us (with a lift, lots of experience, and a fully equipped shop) about 5 hours the first time, about 4 the 2nd time around.
