#1 Speed limit Autobahn

Post by nefematic » Fri Jan 25, 2019 7:03 am

Media buzz is more persistant than in the past regarding a general speed limit on the Autobahn. Today only a fraction of the stretches remain without a limit, these might soon be doomed. Increasing pressure from enviromentalists, backed by questionable EU pollutant limits, gives the discussion a broader backing than in the past. Traffic rarely allows for high speed travel over a distance, still I will miss my favorite sign on the Autobahn (which lifts prior limits). So if you ever thought about going flat out on the Autobahn, hurry up. The not-so-auto-affine are taking over, times are changing.

Been there, done that on a honda VFR800R. Group of us doing a steady 140mph, with Audis up our rear wheels none the less.
At one stage, I slowed down to 100mph, at which point I was overtaken by a renault kango van.

That would be a shame. Always enjoyed that part of my summer drive to Hungary, giving it some welly.

I always will remember talking to two British bikers in a service area in Austria. The complained how everyone drove so fast in Germany, and clearly didn't care aout the speed limit :questionmarks: I explained to them that there isn't one and that's why the people went so fast. They had never heard of it and drove 600miles at 130k. :policeblue:

I gave the eType a good run between Stuttgart and Munich 2 days before Christmas. 206 km/h according to GPS. I'm sure it had a bit more to give but my throttles aren't opening fully at the moment. Maintained between 190 and 200 for quite some distance as the road was relatively clear.

Overtook a BMW M6, that quite quickly sped up to keep pace with me - no doubt unable to believe the speed of a 50 year old car.

I had 263 k in my Citroen SM. Maybe 240 in reality, and then the engine blew up, freezing solid when I rolled out to leave the autobahn.

Had a waterhose blow up when trying to speed with my audi s4. The water blew right onto the glowing turbo and it made a lot of smoke. Good thing the seat was leather, my trousers were brown afterwards

Today I read 7640 km of the Autobahn have a speed limit, 18150 km do not. Surely feels the other way around, here in southern Germany.

Oh there are nice parts here up north, like Kassel to Dortmund, or Göttingen to Leipzig... just forget about the A7 north of Göttingen, a lot of jams and roadworks all the time. And the A2, Warszaw to Paris / the german port of it is heavily restricted and checked by disguised police cars all the time.

Most of german Autobahn is built for swift cruising.
Toddling along them with 130 km/h is extremely dangerous as it makes you fall asleep in short time.
OK, the best you can do for the environment is to take out of it human beings, as they in fact all pollute the environment. So I can fully understand the greens to call for a speed limit.
But being old fashioned I think, saving lives is more important than killing humans (and innocent cars as well, by the way). So I think the smartest our government said since years is: Germany is not going to have a general speed limit.
And to save the environment, maybe the green start to take themselves out of it. That'll save much more pollution...

It also changes laws which means you can't drive an E Type in Madrid!
