#1 IVA thoughts?

Post by Gfhug » Sat Oct 31, 2020 8:18 pm

Reading the Torygraph today they have a article about MGBs rebuilt or restomoded by Frontline Abingdon where they replace the old lump by an MX5 engine. With a nominal 289bhp it has 0-60 time of 4 secs, quite stunning.
Two questions for the wise:
How would a car like this pass an IVA to keep the original registration and not go Q reg?
Can we fit the engine in an E and get better performance and 40 mpg?

Hi Geoff......if you look at the dvla site for how to register a vehicle you will see quite a few different classes of registration..... https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration so it very much depends on how they are registering the vehicle ....or when they notify the dvla of an engine change what procedure is followed........it dosent always follow that an engine change requires an IVA.......they probably use the "Rebuilt vehicle" procedure......Steve

Steve, thank you for answering question one, but how about question two?
Even better if we could transpose an F Type engine :swerve:

I would love to know how a 1600 cc, or is it now 1800cc engine reliably produces 289 bhp. I had not realised that smoke and mirrors were so powerful !

Edit : I see it is apparently a 2.5 litre engine. 311 bhp /ton is claimed, but how the weight of the MGB is reduced to achieve this is not stated

300 bhp from a turbo four pot 1.8 litre is not highly stressed. Audi turbo 1.8s are happy with well over 300 bhp and no modifications apart from a remap of the ECU. Many modern hatches make as much and will last for well over 100,000 miles. My Megane lasted 200,000 with no rebuild, just a remap and regular servicing (admittedly only producing 250bhp). And my S2000 (250bhp naturally aspirated) is fast approaching 90,000 miles. T’aint no big thing to get 289bhp. It’s only us old foggies with 1948 technology under the bonnet that need cubes to make power.

Following on this idea and to keep it in the Jaguar family would an AJ6 or AJ-V8 fit in the E?
A Getrag gearbox would probably be needed but the diffs seem well capable of more power.
Then think of the performance :swerve: .
Get a 0-60 time down to the 4 seconds claimed for that MGB and you could really disappoint a hot-hatch driver

Hi Geoff...yes almost anything can be made to fit......but your starting to sound like our colonial friends...if your aftar something with plenty of go and great mpg get a second hand Corsa or similar.....or if your really after great performanc in an E type body...then go electric......I think its just an age thing  starting to worry if the pension will cover the fuel bills

Couple of issues with the more modern Jag engines. The AJ6 and AJ16 are slant sixes and might require the wider V12 engine frames. As none of the Yank Lumps will fit without engine frame surgery I imagine neither will the Jag V8. The modern sixes are oriented differently, exhaust and inlet are on the opposite sides to the XK engine. There exists at least one E with a Jaguar AJ16 transplant.

If you fuel inject and fit lpg to a standard v12 etype and you'll achieve all of this and more. Also, as this isn't considered a significant change to the technical characteristics of the car, you still qualify for historic status, so need to MOT or pay road tax. (it still runs at ~20mpg but lpg is approximately half the price of petrol.)

kind regards
Marek
