#1 Brexit Bonus!

Post by Heuer » Wed Jan 20, 2021 4:21 pm

Best news yet about Brexit - the French can no longer pusue British drivers for speeding once they have left the country and it applies to all EU states. Equally, as we want to be fair to our European neighbours, we can't fine them if they find an opportunity to go fast over here. To be clear the Police must fine drivers either when the offence is committed or before they depart the country in question. No sharing of address information.

That'll annoy the Gendarmes! They used to love hiding on the last, fast straight roads towards the ferries and tunnel.
I was lucky. Myself and friends on bikes got flagged down but we were going so fast we couldn't stop if we wanted. No number plate on the front of course. Never heard any more about it, and that was years ago.

To quote Clarkson - "France, the greatest race track in the World". Have personally used it many times by staying on B and C roads. Game on, there is life after Covid!

All well and good, but if you're at all sensitive to such things, I'd recommend taking your own preferred brand of gloves and 'lube' to give to the nice Douanier when you subsequently return to France and the ANPR scans your numberplate as you roll down the ramp......

Much like in the UK the Police have a finite amount of time to prosecute. Two weeks in the UK, 350 days in Italy; no idea what it is in France.

Well all I'd say is, beware the small print. As we all know, PCNs issued in respect of fixed camera violations have to be served within 28 days of the contravention in order to be valid. Except where they don't! As Mrs P found to her cost when hit with a PCN served six months after driving in a bus lane. Much as I was prepared to argue 'til I was blue in the face that they had 'timed out' it turns out that there are get-out clauses in the relevant Acts that allow them to do this. Power rarely lies with the individual in such circumstances...... :banghead:

The answer to your question Steve is that "yes".....if you cannot pay the fine the Gendarmes can indeed confiscate your car until you do....I have seen with my own eyes more than one driver being escorted to a cash point by French Traffic police during Le Mans weekend.....not me I hasten to add    ....I spoke to a chap who was going too fast (much too fast in fact) in a Porsche. Fine was over €900 on the spot...he had the receipt....and he was immediately banned there and then. Had to get his passenger onto his insurance there and then or the car would have been impounded....don't mess with the French Traffic police.

Would they not keep the number plate info and wait until you next come back to england ?

Besides that, german newspapers say its „hard times in the UK“, pictures of almost empty shops in ireland, problems with goods bein send over + high taxes so that british clothing companys have to pay high taxes for export and goods coming back, and that covid is hitting england hard ?

I am waiting for s parts parcel for my Imp kit, plus the 2+2 windshield for the E- Type (which I paid before Brexit).

It is that sort of reporting, misinformation and wilfull lying that makes us glad to be out of the EU. No empty shelves here and we are making a concious effort to avoid buying any EU goods. No more French wine and German cars. I am sure other countries are consideriung following our lead.

British wine isn't bad actually. Won quite a lot of blind tasting competitions in France. Just can't get hold of it in our supermarkets. Reds not as good as the whites

Never mind. We've got a great choice of Australian, New Zealand, South African, Chilean etc. etc.

All with a lot to offer.

“ no idea what it is in France.”

I do. The previous grace periods granted to EU drivers are no longer valid for us Brits. We now go back to the old days. On the spot fine. €135. They will even drive you to a hole in the wall to pay, and if you can’t, your ride is no longer available until you or someone on your behalf does. Welcome to Brexit and the good old days before the police talked to each other and before insurance policies automatically covered driving anywhere in the EU. Yup green cards are back. Yipee!

Oh, and fines are not just for speeding. On the spot fines cover all kinds of motoring offences, including several just for us non EU tourists.

And they’ll take your sandwiches as well.

Oh, almost forgot. From the end of March 2021 U.K. bank cards won’t work in the EU, unless Boris pulls his finger out and includes financial services in the next round of negotiations.
