?3.1 million for a replica? Yet Lord Snooty down at Goodwood would accept it at one of his events, yet not accept the new lightweight E Types.

That alone could promote an entirely separate discussion! ;) Anyhow I've always loved Spitfires, fabulous engineering and a great sight to watch. Always held Merlin powered aircraft in high regard, my Grandfather was a navigator in a Lancaster during the War. A bit like with classic cars, there's an emotion behind them.

You can see real Spitfires and Hurricanes over London today.
Seems they are commemorating 75 years since the start of the Battle of Britain. Over The Mall at 11:45 from the east so should fly over Stratford and the rest of east london

I shall be there! Stood on the Millennium Footbridge as they pass overhead on their way to Buck House.

PS A pair of Spitfires and a pair of Hurricanes: that's pretty much a whole Lancaster's worth! :D

Wish I'd known this was on, our offices are opposite St Paul's and I'd have got a great view from the roof terrace.

Just back. Bl**dy marvellous it was too! :D They actually came in straight over the top of St Paul's, but from where I was, stood in the sunshine on the bridge, I had the perfect view. A gaggle of five Spitfires and Hurricanes, followed by the Spitfire & Eurofighter duo, followed by three Eurofighters. Splendid.

For anyone else with a love of such things there's this in a month's time:

http://biggin75.strikingly.com/

Sold out I believe, but it's pretty easy to find space around Biggin to watch them depart and return (and display). The sight and sound of 24 Spitfires and Hurricanes getting airborne should be quite something!

Might try and get towards the IoW to see the Grice(?) flight.
And the 18th August is more appropriate than the 15th September as it was a busier day.

And Simon, not just made a Lancaster with that many Merlins, but half a Shacklebomber with the Griffs

There can be no downside to owning a Spitfire. For one thing it means you can afford one which is a vast improvement on my financial circumstances.

If I could, I would.

Here in Sandown, Isle of Wight a week does not go by without a spitfire going overhead. Brilliant!

Every time one does though, I always wonder why they never fitted silencers to them. Yes I know that silencers rob a bit of power, but during the war the Germans did not have radar (at least not until almost the end). What they did have was massive concrete listening dishes. If the British planes had been fitted with silencers, what they lost in power would have been more than made up for in stealth (I would have thought). But then why don't today's piston light aircraft not have silencers just like cars. Living between Sandown and Bembridge airfields the sound of light aircraft is quite wearing. Why can't they have exhaust pipes with silencers running down the side or within the body?

Skiday, sorry to contradict, but the Germans didn't rely on listening dishes. Even by 1942 they had comprehensive radar when the Bruneval raid took place. So silencers on a Spitfire would have been of no use plus the exhaust stacks were actually designed to give extra thrust. Adding a few mph onto top speed, which would be lost by having a silencer, actually made slower by one. And in combat every extra mph was needed.

As for silencers on light aircraft, they all add weight and generally decrease performance. Everything like that added to an aeroplane has to be thoroughly designed and researched for all effects on the aircraft, weight, centre of gravity, performance etc. then be approved by the Civil Aviation Authority. Unlike a car where you can pretty much do what you like, in aviation everything is very closely controlled. It means everything is much more expensive. A ?1000 exhaust system would end up costing 10 times that once approved and fitted. That's a lot of money.

Some European countries do require them, but as said it is expensive.

I recall being on IoW recently walking from the Tennyson memorial to the Needles when I heard the gentle thrum of a Merlin engine. A Spit flew over the headland, came back around, did a roll and went on its way around the south of the island. Made my day.

On the point of silencing aircraft I find it a little odd that some of our favourite race tracks also operate as airfields allowing the un-silenced bark of a Lycoming engine every day. Yet race days on the race tracks that surround the airfield are restricted to reduce 'noise polution', and track days are policed with the heavy hand of Health & Safety meters lest loud cars or motorcycles disturb Mrs Nimby while she's hanging out her unmentionables.

We are an odd species.

Just to clarify the situation on the Isle of Wight and why we are fortunate to have the regular sights and sounds of Spitfires that Andrew, (Skiday), refers to.

It is not that we are a rural backwater and are a step back in time once you travel over the Solent - it that we have many specialist companies, including Airframe Assemblies Ltd, based at Sandown Airport employing the diverse skills of the Island - originating from the island's rich heritage of aircraft industries, (Saunders Roe and Britten-Norman), to shipbuilding and boatbuilding, to being the birthplace of the Hovercraft- all employing specific craft skills.

Check out Airframes Assemblies really good webpage for examples of their work : http://www.airframes.co.uk/

Also with Goodwood Aerodrome over at Chichester offering rides in their Spitfires, these are frequently seen flying a route around the Island, down to the western tip to turn at the Needles and head back around over the south of Island.

Great sights and sounds !!

Cheers,

Dave

You have Spitfires flying overhead and you drive around in a fifty-year-old car - I'm not convinced!

With sincerest apologies for posting a link from the Daily Mail (It's not my fault - I was sent it by a friend. Honest!), but knowing there are a number on here who also appreciate Spitfires I thought this might be of interest:
