#1 Isle of Man TT - 24 September

Post by Simon P » Tue Sep 13, 2016 1:24 pm

As if riding a bike round the Isle of Man TT course wasn't already enough of a challenge in itself......

Pah! Nothing new there!

I was on the IoM in 1979 for the TT races. In between two of the sessions, while I was watching the races from the Gooseneck, a stunt rider by the name of Dave Taylor rode past on a modified Honda CX500 on its rear wheel. I'm sure this wasn't his only attempt, and am I not convinced he completed the whole course just on the rear wheel. But I was there and I saw it happen. This was the last year Mike the bike Hailwood rode competitively. It was something to watch him cornering faster while sitting properly on the bike than the 'modern' riders could by climbing off. Somewhen, there used to be some photos, but no more.

IIRC, Dave Taylor died from cancer, still a young man. I know he campaigned tirelessly for road safety.

"No idea what the point was,"?

Because it can be done. Why do we chase land speed records, climb mountains, look up at the stars? Why did our ancestors wonder what was over that hill when they decided to walk out of Africa?

It is in our DNA, it is why we are what we are, the most brainy, thoughful, diverse, dominant species on the planet. It is why you can ask the question and I can respond, but I cant see you and you cant hear me.

"it is why we are what we are, the most brainy, thoughtful, diverse, dominant species on the planet"

To quote Douglas Adams......

“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.”

I presume this is the Son or Grandson of the Lampkin I use to watch scrambiling in my youth in the 50's/ 60's?

Tony
It could be both.
Arthur Snr had 3 sons, one of whom produced Dougie. All were in some way involved with scrambles or trials.
