Nothing to do with Jaguar, but i thought i would share this with you just so we can have a laugh at someone elses expense.

I am interested in all sorts of daft old cars and something i am recently recovering from; is a fetish for the variomatic DAf 33. I have 2: one good and one knackered anyway i haven't used them and decided to sell them, this bloke came to see them and offered me £ 800 for the 2. with the intention of coming back today to buy them. I then got this email:

Hello

It would appear that I have to speak to my wife when I get home, I have just spoken on the phone to her and the word "divorce" was peppered, along with a range of expletives throughout the conversation.

Bare with me just a few hours

I thought it was a joke, and today i emailed him and said:

Hi

I just wondered how you are getting along. I have 2 more people that are interested. What shall I tell them?

Regards

Dougal

And this is the genuine reply i have just received off him:

Hello

Believe it or not I'm actually getting divorced now. I'm currently living on my sisters settee and I have to go to the solicitors on Monday do unfortunately, and I do have to apologise profusely, I'm going to have to let you down. If any of the other people who are interested might want a Daf 46 then one might be for sale very soon!

I well remember exchanging my Triumph 2.5 PI for a Daf 44 at the height of the 1974 fuel/energy/political crisis . This was not necessarily the wisest move as although it did save me some fuel ( and had the best heater of any car I have ever had ) against a head wind on the M62 the fuel consumption could drop down into the late 20s of mpg, although it is fair to say that on the level and without a gale it was nearer to 40mpg . I lost patience with it when it rotted through the rear valance inside 18months, and I also got fed up with ribbing from friends who thought there was an incongruity in seeing it parked next to my then aeroplane ( a Beech Bonanza ) which did about 12 mpg at very best

I think it was a setup from the start... it just shows you how low one has to be to be willing to go to sell a DAF.

A Vee tail ?

Indeed , yes it was . G-APVW , now G-NEWT and owned by Air Marshal Sir John Allison . It was not in fact as nice an aeroplane to fly as people think , being both longitudinally and directionally unstable and thus having a tendency in anything but the smoothest conditions both to porpoise and snake .
