What’s missing from yours?

#1

Postby chrisfell » Tue Oct 10, 2017 9:39 pm

Some while ago, probably on another forum, I was astonished to discover that the air plenum chamber should have had a seal around the carb plate. And another seal should have existed around the top of the radiator. No such seals existed on my car. Since then I’ve discovered exhaust heat shields, various pieces of internal trim, many screws and bolts, a number of clips and several pieces of foam and rubber around the gearbox tunnel are no longer on my car, if indeed they were ever fitted.

I also know that my car wears S2 front uprights and brakes, as well as the thicker torsion bar. But what’s missing from yours or changed and do you know why?

Good query Chris.
Yet missing, at least that I know of, and funnily on both my S1 and S2:
radiator foam-to-bonnet
2 small rubber mud protection in the bonnet
rubber flaps along torsion bars
clip on bellhousing for speedo cable
accelerator pedal return spring

Must be some more...so keen on reading other's.

A Jag-lovers thread from a couple of months ago pointed out this missing bracket, which secures the bonnet plug near the bonnet hinge:

Now on order and to be installed soon.

If I wrote a list of all the fiddly bits that were missing when I got mine it would fill a book. Some were obvious at the time....others not....many bits have been sourced but I still have a good few to go!! Anyone got a gear box vent pipe for example....I know it should be in the wanted section btw....I ain't too optimistic....

Currently?
my 3.8 FHC has no floors, kick panels, sills, boot floor, rear wheel arches.....
Ross the panel man sent me a load of pics of the progress.
It was like looking at the pics in the Karma Sutra. You have to turn them around a couple of times before you work out what you're looking at..

I only bought it because it was otherwise pretty much complete and it was already in Australia.
I have pretty much finished refurbishing all of the other components and the body shell will be ready around April next year.

Tim

I don't know if the vent pipe for a '62 is the same as a '65, but I got one for mine from SNG for about £35 (C25028).
And then I found the original one in a pile of bits.

Parts that don't appear in the pictures in the Parts manual seem to be a problem.
On mine I found that the spacers at the bottom of the picture frame and those under the engine mounts were worthwhile upgrades.

And then we can have a worry thread about all the bits we have left over after a rebuild.

Chris

This is an excellent thread. Over the last six years of ownership I've continually found small bodges and missing items. It's funny that before you realised some clip or other small part was missing you were fine and then suddenly you can't live without it. I blame the Forum for this!
I'm currently stripping the car to remove the engine and gearbox and have already found numerous missing, must have items. The latest is the gearbox breather pipe and the speedo cable clip. What happens when you have every last bit-sell the car?
One important thing I do seem to lack is the underbody exhaust heatshields. According to SNG there are two for the S1 OTS:-C25101 & BD20439 but only the latter is listed as fitting the 3.8. Is this right or are both required?

Cheers
