#1 Help needed in finding Owner

Post by Heuer » Thu Feb 09, 2017 11:21 am

Just received this email seeking some help:

"Hello David,

Louise Gibbs gave me your email address. I am looking for a Greek friend, his name was Andy, but I don't remember his surname. He had a brother in Oxford with an E-Type Jaguar! The brother had a restaurant for some years and he died rather young. I knew Andy from 1964 when I met the brother in Oxford in his restaurant. I met Andy again in 1967/1968 not 100% sure, when he told me his brother had died and left the restaurant to his mother and the E-Type went to Andy. There wouldn't have been many Greek people in Oxford with a restaurant and an E-Type and died quite young. Andy lived in Derby and worked at Derby Rolls Royce. I need to find a surname please if you could help in any way it would be appreciated very much. I have been in touch with Jaguar sales in Oxford and they have looked for me, but can't find anything without the surname Kind

Regards

Linda Francis"

Long shot but anyone able to assist?

Hi Linda,
Its gonna be hard without a surname.
Have you tried contacting the " Town and Gown" in oxford to see if they have any records of the previous restaurant owners, it might be on the deeds if they have them.

David : I have a number of contacts from Rolls Royce of that era( more it must be said from the car side than the aero engine side ) so I shall ask around to see if anyone remembers a Greek named Andy . It may take a little time

There is a "Rolls Royce Retired Employees Association" they could maybe help .

For more details about the association, contact Sheila Furniss on 01332 516744 or Pat Neal on 0116 210 6917.

Hi
I have been talking with a lady for about a month now, when I told her the name was Remzi, she said well let me tell you something now
She said her niece was married to Remzi Avci's
nephew! Which may have been Andy's son
She married went over to Turkey had a child and she came back home because of their religion and didn't like it
The lady said she has lost contact with her niece now
but she will try to find out more for
I have some newspapers coming from the Oxford history
About the restaurants he owned and the years
So near, but still so far away!

I have received today 2 newspaper cuttings from The History Centre Oxford with a photo of Andy's brother in it
Remzi Avci the Jaguar owner, was awarded a bravery honour in 1975 and he sold The Bridge Hotel in July 1977
I can't under why I had the Year wrong of him dying, when I feel sure his brother Andy said he had died at the end of the 1970s
He was very well known in Oxford and I don't know why I can't get to know more from my adverts
Anymore suggestions please
Thank you Linda

From a quick Google, had you already found this?

By 1962 the restaurant had gone Indian, and was called the Moti Mahal. But its most famous period began in 1966, when André Chavignon opened La Sorbonne here: his chef in the early days was none other than Raymond Blanc, now the owner of the famous Manoir au Quat’saisons. La Sorbonne closed in the early 1990s, and the restaurant that has in its time been Chinese, Indian, and French is now Thai.

I know it's a long shot but perhaps an email to Raymond Blanc?

Still looking for Andy,
Thank you Simon I have checked out Andre Chavagnon and spoke to his wife Susan, she thought it might be the Moti Mahal and the name Mr Miah was mentioned! It's that E-Type Jaguar he had that should help find him, once we find the surname!
Does anyone know the owners name in 1962-1966
I have checked the electoral roll for them years st the Moti Mahal and there was quite a few names on there, but can't find them on the Ancestry
The owner may have had another address
Kind Regards
Linda

We used to visit remzi’s in Oxford a lot.
I just came to this forum whilst doing some research.
Apologies for saying this on E Type forum, but Remzi had a Pink Cadillac. A TV documentary was made of him driving this car back to Turkey and into the dusty small village where he was born.
Currently there is planning permission submitted by Remzi Avci for changes to pub in Oxford.
So, the family are still going strong here.
