Alternator refurb
#1 Alternator refurb
Can anyone recommend someone to refurbish my alternator? I'm pretty certain it's the original unit fitted to my car which is an early 1970 UK vehicle. The car does not have a/c but the alternator is rated at 60 amp. Perhaps this is because the car has a factory HRW, or maybe this was standard fit at the time?
Thanks in advance
Andy

#2 Re: Alternator refurb
Andy, 60 amp became standard during the S2 production.
If you look elsewhere there are topics on changing the alternator to a Nipendenso (spelin?) which has a built in voltage regulator, as the modern VRs are not good quality.
You might wish to do that rather than get it rebuilt.
See here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6668 and on page 2 an alternative alternator coming in cheaper than the Nippondenso

#3 Re: Alternator refurb
Hi Geoff
I had already read through the posts about upgrading the alternator, but that's not really the way I want to go right now. A lot of the components on my car are clearly original, and with a few exceptions I am trying to reuse as many as I possibly can. And replacing the alternator means more work - sourcing the correct mounting hardware etc - and I've more that enough on my plate already. Which is why I wanted to simply send it off to be checked tested and refreshed and bolt it back onto the car when the time comes. I've also found with other cars I've dealt with that original components are very often much better built than their modern equivalents.

Send alternator, any alternator, to Quality Remanufacturing in Paterson, NJ. Google, and you will get all the info. If you live in the USA, no matter who you send your alternator to, this is where they end up. Go direct, save a bunch of dough !

Thanks for all of your input boys. I went with Classic & Vintage. They have an identical refurbished unit ready to go on an exchange basis, so I've sent mine off. I did think to ask them to refurbish mine and send it back, but this seemed a bit pointless as I have no idea if mine is the unit originally fitted to the car as it has no date code on it as I've experienced with other cars. In fact it has no ident on it at all. I only know what part number it is because Carolyn at C&V told me!

Hi Andy
Keen to hear how this goes as I have the alternator on my 'winter list' too.
Mine charges well but very noisy so I think a complete check and rebuild in order.
cheers

#10 Re: Alternator refurb
Having decided on Classic & Vintage, I dispatched my alternator to them using Interparcel/Hermes, but all these incompetents have managed to do is to loose my parcel. So I guess I'm now faced with trying to source a replacement LRA 119, or go for an upgrade with an internal regulator? If anybody has a 60 amp original unit sitting around as the result of an upgrade, please let me know.

I'll have a look at the incorrect one that I was sold and see what it is. Obviously, it's never been fitted. It might be what you're looking for. It won't be until Sunday though.

Hi Darren
Neither Interparcel or Hermes have been even remotely helpful. You just get a meaningless procession of apologies and platitudes. In particular, I ask the simplest of questions, and get no reply. For instance, the last entry in the tracking thread was that it had been loaded on to a van. When I ask if the driver has been interviewed, I get no reply. I ask if the theft of my item [for thats what I consider has happened] has been reported to the police, and again I get no reply. The only mention that there has been of insurance is asking me to produce a receipt for the item!! I realise that they have procedures to follow, but I think most folks would find it quite irritating to be asked to produce a receipt for an item fitted in a Coventry factory nearly 50 years ago!

3 weeks after dispatch, my alternator was finally delivered to C & V on Friday. I wonder what Interparcel are going to say when I suggest that they might like to return to cost of the postage? I'm not holding my breath.

Good news re. the missing Alternator Andy. But it does make you think about losing original parts.
I try to hand deliver whenever I can but living in Edinburgh makes that not always possible.
Still very keen to hear your views of their work when you get it back. Do they polish the housing as part of the refurb?
cheers
Ash
