#1 Which tracker device?

Post by malcolm » Sat Jan 06, 2018 9:38 am

I'm thinking of having a tracker device fitted. Question is, which one? Even when you choose a firm, there are many options - VHF, GPS, GSM, or all 3?
I was thinking of this group:

and wondering if the basic VHF unit (cheapest!) would be adequate. I only tend to go to France and Spain which this unit seems to cover.

Update, looking at this specific device, as the annual monitoring cost can be bought as for "lifetime of ownership" for £399, rather than most are about £160++ p.a ongoing.

Malcolm - I can only say that Tracker themselves ( http://www.tracker.co.uk/faqs/) cover the parts of Europe you mention as standard and have a pretty good success rate in the UK, I believe. They have (or had) a one price/lifetime plan at one stage - and I know that they send service engineers out to deal with things like non-functioning batteries on the unit which is independent from the car's supply, I believe.

But there are a plethora of companies and options......

I have experience of using Tracker in my 911 and found them to be an excellent company to deal with. The lifetime membership is great value and the guy who came to service it was extremely efficient and very respectful of the car.

Things may have changed but, at the time, I think Tracker were the only company to offer multiple signal units to give maximum opportunity of recovery.

I have no connection with the company other than as a satisfied customer.

A new company has recently emerged called Classic Tracker. They are marketing quite heavily at the moment and have some good deals on offer. I'm not sure about how they stack up technically, though.

Stuart

Thanks for the feedback guys. Think I'm getting to understand more about it now.

I had tracker fitted to my Aston Vanquish and one of the benefits with the Aston was there were so many places it could be hidden. Trying to hid the tracker in an E Type would be more of a challenge, and if the thieves know E Types they would know there are only a couple of places to look.

There are tracking devices you can buy outright and log in on your phone which are quite cheap and about the size of a large coin, then perhaps spend the balance of the money on an effective immobilizer/anti theft device.

The discussions that I had with Tracker suggested that thieves expect a tracking device of some sort to be fitted to the more valuable cars but they don't bother trying to find them. They simply park the car up somewhere away from their base of operation and wait to see if the car gets claimed. If its still there a couple of days later they grab it again in the knowledge that they're clear away with it.
