Many interesting comments and observations. My own view would be that a dichotomy is developing with such expensive cars....they are restored to "concourse" or what ever else one may describe them as with the aim of finding an investor who thinks he or she may make money. They probably won't be driven. Then there are cars that are restored and in the process, sympathetically improved to address the few shortcomings the cars had...so better lights, better heater fans, better engine fans, modern gear boxes, improvements to brakes etc...they wouldn't pass muster with the concourse/originality obsessed but are hopefully easier to drive in modern traffic...probably the sorts of things Jaguar might have done had they been making e types now..these are driven and enjoyed to at least some degree.
We then have two classes of cars...the concourse cars that will be trailered almost everywhere, live in cotton wool and become museum pieces....and the practical classics that still get to Sainsbury. Still get wet. Still get driven in the manner Jaguar intended. Mine is the latter..not perfect....the list of non original bits is long...although they are just done for practicality. She does a few shows..she does runs to friends..she even goes to the supermarket. Most e types still fall into the second category. As time passes more and more will migrate to the former category I suspect...as has happened with some Ferraris and Astons...a bit sad but probably inevitable given their current value....for now mine remains a nice driver :drinkingcheers:

A question; I have often heard that the dash pot covers were cadmium plated, but never seen any proof. Can someone explain please? I've had my flat floor for over 30 years now and they have never showed any sign of plating at all. But at least the concensus is that the car is nothing like it should be. I keep wondering about the screen pillar caps too, and whether it has Butler chromes and, and, and........

It is not the dashpots which are said to have been plated, but the brass tops to the piston dampers. I have to say, however, that I have never seen such plated tops - the ones I have seen have always been either brass or, on later cars, black plastic

The only options available from Burlens are brass or plastic. Can’t imagine William Lyons signing off a social order of cadmium plated damper caps, when all previous and subsequent Jaguars had whatever SU had supplied. Of course, I could be wrong, and if the concours d’arrogance judging criteria state cad plate, then for your 100 point car, cad plate it is, regardless of what actually came out of the factory.

They were originally cadmium plated but this changed in about May 1962 to unplated. More info: viewtopic.php?p=78968#p78968

So another 'wrong' item on the McLaren car!

The numerous small inaccuracies may seem annoying but the workmanship is to be applauded .

Being critical the "pink" look of the seats/vinyl compared to the carpet is off putting , although its something i've seen only a few weeks ago on a freshly built E [BAS interior] , my wife suggested it could be because some companies do not use Cochineal beetles in the leather dye anymore ? .

Should the carburettor spacers be the asbestos type and not black plastic ? .

During a previous thread i asked my pal the question re the cad plated tops , i was told yes , he had seen both cad and brass in period on early cars .

Thanks Heuer for that. It is one of those silly things that you tink about from time to time and then forget. So, having brass dashpot covers on my 9/61 car is wrong. However will I be ablel sleep at night? ;)

Sarthe...they should be brass....the conundrum is should they be cadmium plated or plain brass   (not that you'll get them replated in cadmium)

Anybody else notice anything unusual about the tachometer?

Also plug caps might be a correct factory change if it was a ZP project car, that type where used extensively on factory prepared cars.
I'm not a concours advocate, but I would go out of my way to make a car as correct as reasonably possible. I would however happily deviate if it suited me, but probably within what the factory is known to have done in period!
I have a list of all the ZP cars somewhere with a list of their mods, they weren't all prepped to the same extent!

Calibrated to 6500rpm and redlined at 6000rpm. Is that part of the ZP package?

Completely off topic, but have you seen the Amazon Prime "Top Gear" programme on the new XKSS? When the Hampster turns on the ignition, the rev counter flicks around to 7,000 and back. Obviously a correct chronometric of course.

Although not directly related to the McLaren car as far as I know it is worth putting on record the ongoing Court case between Derek Hood/JD Classics and Mike Tuke. The first part of the action is concluded and is a very interesting and exciting read, albeit 37 pages long. The judgement has been published, it is public record and you can read it here: http://www.wilmotslitigation.co.uk/blog ... assics-ltd (click on download pdf at bottom of page). It contains content regarding E-Type's.

Thanks for alerting the forum David, as you say a fascinating read, caveat emptor and all that.
I wonder if this will get written up in any of the classic car press, I rather doubt it somehow.
Good for Mike Tuke in pursuing his case.

:banghead:
Had I £40 millions, would certainly not one single second consider investing in the classic car market.
Still surprising to see how investors get easily carried away.

Interesting
Actually there is some sense in investing in classic cars...the return you get when selling at the correct time and place is tax free, provided it’s a personal sale and not part of your business of course!
You must, however, understand exactly what you are buying and whether it is genuine and of course choose a car that is on the up!
The mistake was that he may not have known the classic car business well enough...as you say “caveat emptor”

Hmmm!

Expecting a market you nothing about to produce higher returns than conventional investment markets is one thing. Trusting those investments to a second hand car dealer is quite another. Sorry if I sound callous, but even if deliberate and calculated fraud is found, I have little sympathy for Tuke. He should chose his friends with more care.
