#1 Query about the Gauge Shop

Post by Kember17 » Thu Apr 26, 2018 9:23 am

This is not designed to trash a supplier's reputation or to be a call for a scalping party, but a simple factual query.

I was wondering if anybody here had specific current information about the state of play at the Gauge Shop.

I sent Alan Davis at the Gauge Shop in Edenbridge my full set of gauges in October for refurbishment and have not yet had them back.

I am having difficulty making contact with him and, reading Google results and various car fora, I can see that Mr Davis does not necessarily possess the finest communication skills.
The last I heard from him was in a round robin email on 12 March saying that he was experiencing delays owing to illness. He has not responded to any of my several communications.

I am getting to the point where I might just drive down there and collect my instruments and try with someone else.

Thanks in advance

Drop them off at Speedograph Richfields on the way home.

I have dealt with Alan on three occasions, and whilst he is not necessarily quick, he certainly does a good job. He works from a shed which has a very poor mobile signal. The land line he has links back to his house. I have enjoyed many a long chat with his charming wife! I have never met Alan, but it wouldnt surprise me if he had a health issue. The man is genuine, and maybe just pop round, as you suggested.

Barry,

Thank you for your message (and your reassurance re quality). I finally spoke to him today, and gleaned much of what you have said from him, and we have agreed a timetable for the return of my instruments (fully serviced).

I'm glad that things appear to be on track.

Best wishes

I am really pleased, Peter. I was sure there wasnt a real problem, other than if Alan was experiencing a health problem. I am sure you will be pleased with his work when it arrives.
Best
Barry

For completeness' and fairness' sake, I thought I should report that I have just received my gauges back from Alan.

They look lovely.

Hi,

I've purchased a complete refurbished gauge set for my 67 E-Type from the Gauge Shop almost 1 year ago. They are very beautifully restored gauges!
2 months ago, i've installed the gauges but the speedometer wasn't working properly so i've contacted Alan from the Gauge Shop.
I've sended the speedometer back to him 1 month ago.
I know that he has received the package but I haven't heard from him yet. I've sended various mails but he doesn't reply on them.
Very poor conversation skills.
I just hope that I get my gauge back

Sorry for my bad English

Kind regards

Dominique

Dominique,

Best to call him if you can. He is better on the phone. I, too, went almost mad trying to get a mail response. But his work is very good.

Today is August 28 and I still do not have my odometer back.
I have tried to reach Mr Davis through various channels (text message, mail, telephone) but without much success.
On July 14th I received an answer to a text message in which he promised to send me the meter at the end of that week but I still have not received anything!
I am tired of it!
Today I sent him this mail:

In June 2018 I sent you an odometer to calibrated from mph to km/h.
Despite many attempts to contact you (telephone, e-mail, text message, etc.) and a one-time promise (via SMS) on 14 July to send this meter at the end of that week I have not heard or received anything from you. .
If you ignore me further I will file a complaint against you with the competent authorities.
Hopefully it will not come that far.

Is there anyone in this group who can help me in the future if I want to file a complaint against Mr Davis, or is there perhaps someone who does not live far from there and wants to contact him?
I'm afraid I will not see my odometer again!

It would unfortunately appear that you are not alone. On an MG Forum there seem to be quite a lot of people trying to get gauges back or have paid for services or goods they haven’t received.

One very valid reason would be Alan Davis’health. He has been poorly before which resulted in delays which I experienced. I spoke to his wife at the time. I did get my gauge back, and he has always done a fabulous job. (See my previous posts on this thread). Have you tried to ring him either at home or his mobile. Home 01732 863073 or mobile 07773 313474. Certainly annoying, but I am sure there is a valid reason. Good luck.
