#1 Help me with my rev counter conversion/rebuild.
Good evening all
I have this rev counter that i would like to rebuild and convert to modern internals so it will work off a 123 distributor.
I would also like to get the clock working with a more modern and reliable mechanism.
Firstly is my rev counter out of a Jag as it ha a 6k red line?
I got this rev counter off ebay and i am unsure of its history.
Any links to conversion kits that i will need and parts please post.

Like many others I had my clock rebuilt by mike eck the US.

Not sure it is a jag Speedo per se as the early cars had a red line at 5500 and had the clock in the tachometer. Later cars had a separate clock. It looks like a generator driven type. It has just two terminals and would be connected to the a.c. generator that early cars had on the rear of the inlet cam. It can be converted to run with a voltage pulse taken from the contact breaker connection on the coil but would mean removing all the current electrical internals apart from the meter and then building a module to allow it to run from a pulse taken from the coil.
The clock I would fit an optical conversion board to and it will be fine....see clock for classics.

They sell a kit that you can fit with a steady hand. Did mine and it is brilliant. Keeps almost perfect time. Think they will fit it for you if you like...

The clocks for classics kit retains the mechanical clock. It just replaces the unreliable wiper contact that energizes the rewind solenoid with a contact less optical system. Mine works brilliantly.... you get the original smiths clock tick. Even the timing adjustment is just as it was. If the clock mechanism works then it is an hour's work to fit the kit. You get excellent instructions. All you need is a small screw driver or two and a very steady hand.... btw. I have no connection to them...just a happy customer.

That looks to me like a Daimler V8 tachometer . Like the Jaguar equivalent, it is driven by an AC generator on the engine ( on the Daimler the generator is attached to the distributor drive, on Jaguars it is driven from the inlet camshaft ) . Thus I'm afraid it may be both difficult and expensive to use it because if you have no AC generator you will need to buy one , and even if you do have one, it ( the tacho ) may need recalibration

If you get the tacho converted and use the 123 distributor, you will likely need to install a 6800 ohm resistor in the wire from the coil to the distributor. This solved my tacho sticking:

EDIT. Actually, the resistor did not cure my rev counter from sticking. It's quite odd in that if I accelerate gently, the needle moves OK. But on hard acceleration the needle rises to 2k and stops till I upchange when it flicks up, then settles to a new figure.

I used this eBay external RVI to RVC convertor. You by pass all the ineternals and wire it up straight to the tacho needle.

This is NOT a RVI type instrument, and thus the converter will not work - it is one driven by the AC generator from camshaft ( jaguar ) or distributor ( Daimler V8 )

Just had mine done by speedy cables in Wales. Converted for 123 ditstr, and updated the clock to electronic format, once fitted its as standard visually.
