Temporary or drive away insurance for classic car
#1 Temporary or drive away insurance for classic car
Hi Gentlemen,
hope you can give me any advice. I'd like to buy a UK registered classic car from 1965 (It comes with valid MOT) but to drive this from somewhere in Cornwall to Dover I need an insurance.
Here the problems starts I'm from Germany, no UK resident:
1. GERMAN insurance don't ensure UK registered car at all
2. Temporary insurance is available in the UK, also to me, but not for car being classic cars
3. An anual insurance I only get as an UK resident
Any idea how I get a oneday insurance to get the car to Dover?
The funny thing is,from Dover on it is no problem, there is a travel insurance do this, but they are not allowed to ensure UK registered car in the UK.
Hope anyone has a good idea, put it on trailer is not an option, it not a high value car, that would kill calculation.
Thanks
Regards
Michael

Perhaps make it part of the deal that the seller delivers it to Dover for you?

Or ask them to put you on their insurance for a couple of days.

Hello Michael,
I had a similar problem when buying my E Type. For me tourinsure was the solution. You need a bill of sale, the MOT certificate, the number of the numberplate and the title of the car. I think they have partner companies all over the world who will insure the car for you. Sounds a bit strange but worked fine in my case. You will get an insurance on your name for the bought car with the numberplate number you send them. The insurance is valid one year and cost me about 1.300€. You have to pay in advance, but you can quit anytime and you get the difference back (aliquot).
Mine was for Canada, but i think it will work the same for UK.

Hi,
It seems putting me on sellers contract would be the most easy one. Tourinsure I checked, thats nice , they cover all Europe but they exclude the UK when it is a UK registered car. Trailer or hire someone to ride it down to Dover is killing my bill. It is not a valued Jag, it is just a Morris Minor for a bargain price I would put next to my Jag just because of some space. .... and some kind of car illness...
Thanks
Michael

Michael...just beware that the seller would not be the owner of the vehicle...as it would have been sold to you....unless you post date the bill of sale.... Steve

Hi,
your are correct it's not that simlpe. Surprising how complicated this default case can be. It is registered with valid MoT and no straight foreward way to get is insured. Even as UK resident, how do you get temporary insurance on a classic car?

Some people, as part of their insurance have 3rd party insurance to drive another person's car with the owner's permission. That could be possibly the cheapest way to do it. Or get a quote on Shiply.com - I've used it a couple of times. Not only do they transport on trailers but also the option someone drives it.

Mark,
Although most people's insurance covers them to drive other cars, I believe the car still has to be covered by a policy in its own right. Otherwise, if you got out of the car for any reason it would immediately be uninsured.
Michael,
When you talk about insuring it as a classic car are you worried about having it insured for an agreed value ? If so, I think that you would only get that on an annual policy. But for a low value Morris Minor insured for a very limited mileage even an annual policy would probably be very cheap. Of course that doesn't help you if they won't cover a non- UK resident ! Do you know anyone in the U.K. who would insure it in their name and drive it for you. I don't think you have to own a car to take out an insurance policy on it.
In your first post you say a temporary insurance would be available to you but not for a classic car. If you were prepared to risk driving a few hundred miles without the agreed value I don't see why insuring it should be any different to a more modern car. After all, how would they define a classic car ?

Hi,
I don't need any protection on the cars value, this risk I would take. I'm just worry having any kind of accident where potentially a person get hurt, if you have no insurance on such case that what I'm nervous about.
Why dayinsure and others are exclude classic vehicles is totally unclear to me, but as a fact as you check the online offers there are no classic selectable. I tried a few one. On email question I just got the answer that they don't offer it.
Funny that this option is missing could be a good business for someone specialises on this. Found several similar topics in MG and Landy forums.

I wasn't suggesting driving without insurance at all, never a good idea !
I see your problem now, that the online application only allows you to choose a car from a drop down list which does not contain the car you want. One of the downsides of our totally online world, I suppose. In the good old days when you had to go into an insurance brokers office to arrange it there was a real human being who would try to help you ! Now if the computer says no . . . .
I'm sorry I have no other suggestions.

Hire beg borrow or steal a van/car with a towing hook, then hire a car trailer.

Try RH Insurance. They are brokers who insure through a Lloyds syndicate and you get to speak to someone, not a computer.

Why can’t the owner add you as a named driver at your cost - probably £50-ish (may even be free for first added driver?). Then you drive to the coast and your bill of sale or other document kicks in dated next day? He can then cancel his insurance .
It would be best if you exchanged money next day too, as that is probably deemed to be when beneficial ownership passes over. But if you post-date the cheque or he waits a day to bank the cash you should be OK, especially if the sale document states a condition such as ‘sold, subject to reaching port of Dover without breakdown’?

Once you start workarounds things can get really messy if indeed something was to happen. As long as the seller goes along with it, at least you would be covered.
