Another new Etype
#1 Another new Etype
Being an avid watcher of Xkedata I am dismayed to see another car clearly previously stated as written off now appears to have miraculously risen from the dead 850067. I am unsure how people manage to pull this trick off when DVLA are meant to be using vehicle club inspectors to check authenticity . Whilst a great resource Xkedata is being badly abused and false records are extremely easy to create . Registering an email in someone's name and sending in information to complete a story is just one example of what must be going in.
I have personally seen 3 Etype series 1 UK 3.8 cars sold at leading auction houses that looked completely remanufactured and the XKE data had been extremely carefully crafted to create a story .

I agree...although the way I read the xke thread is this Geoff has sold (presumably) the original log book and possibly even the transplant mk2 ( here I make a wild guess) to a bloke called Paul. He is now in the process of "restoring" it. As i read it, as of now Paul has yet to register the car. I have tried various permutations of JHC and JCH 999 pm the mot check site and they all come back as vehicle details could not be found. Given he will need a car club to verify a registration and possibly the dvla will still know it hit a truck he may just have trouble....who knows...

A previous post, quite clearly stated it was scrapped. That post has now disappeared somehow!

edit, the remaining post also states the he owned it for a couple of years, being past tense. Its definitely a log book restoration but when its done I dont hold out any hope that an inspector will be sufficiently knowledgeable to see it for what it is.

There is no mention Andrew of 850067 being written off ,so it could be an honest situation. Although damaged by hitting a truck it may be the owner had 3rd party insurance ? hence the retention of the car.
Whether the car is deemed repairable is another discussion .
A current picture of the car would also be more proof of its existence !
I do agree though , its wrong to dishonestly resurrect chassis numbers from the log book only or minimal parts , mainly because it contributes towards the theft of decent owners cars ! ,

Sorry, I perhaps didnt make it clear. The original poster said he scrapped the car and used the engine in his Mk2. That post has now disappeared.

Hi Andrew....yes i understand what you are saying.....scrapped can mean different things.....as in notified and registered as scrapped with the dvla.(it can no longer be brought to life).....or iv reused the engine in another car and the rest is scrapped (lying in a corner of a field or garden.......i was refering to Malcoms post about contacting the dvla...Steve

“No E’s not, E’s just restin, the Norwegian Opalescent Blue likes kippin......”
It’s all descended into a Monty Python sketch
On a serious note though I think there should be a little tighter control or scrutiny regarding editing and revised entries on xke data.
I have to say also to me “scrapped” is just that.
As such that car or VIN number no longer exists and can not be resurrected.

I remember reading about this car a while ago too, Andrew. All that was left was the engine which went in the MK2 and there used to be a picture of one of the spinners he kept from the car! (Presumably the logbook was retained too)
I would be very suspicious of this car.

there is little doubt in my mind it s a total fabrication. Whether in the overall scheme of things that matters is debatable . I have seen new series one tubs being made probably better than the factory managed it. However its still not right and its leeches off the value of the survivors and is a fraud however its looked at. There is currently a car for sale that is a very very early 38 FF OBL and its not got the correct font on the engine and head and data plate stamping. Clearly a bitsa It could be a log book restoration and who can tell. Oh dear, who is going to judge the proper cars from the fake cars. I think it may be worth our while looking into the casting numbers rather than the stamped numbers. `the casting numbers will tell the real story.

Maybe they've used the ID of the scrapped car to 'ring' a stolen car.
This is definitely dodgy.

Indeed you are right. It’s not a victimless crime nessesarily . Highly tempting For an old boy owner to take a few quid and sell his logbook and see his car resurrected

There was even a short piece in the club mag recently about an "unrestorable" car that got restored.
XKEdate shows the text from an EBay ad from 2005; "saved from the crusher", "donor car", "rolling chassis". Remarkably though, it has managed to retain the original engine & gearbox.

I didnt realise how widespread building from a logbook was untill i started building my replica C type....Iv actually purchased a doner XJ6 and using its major parts on a chassis and body supplied by a Kit manufacturer (Realm) ..when almost completed it will have a dept of transport IVA test....then i can register with the dvla as a Realm C type replica(all legal and above board).....Jaguar cannot be put on the reg documents.......I then get issued a number plate age related to the doner car....However there are manufacturers/Classic resto companies and individuals churning out cars just on old log books... no IVA test.....all you need to do is a vehicle history check on line of the registration number you will see many ..light weight E types/ C/ D types all appear as XJ6 or 2+2 E type..this is also widespread with other makes not just Jaguar.......All blatently driving incorrect registered vehicles ..and in effect no insurance...becaus the vehicle they are driving isnt the one thats registered...Steve
