Series 1 cam cover nearside
#21 Re: Series 1 cam cover nearside
At the risk of confusing things even further we could describe it’s position in the way it is referenced in current automotive design & engineering CAD geometry terms... X Y & Z coordinates! X - length, Y - width, Z - height. With Y0 being the centre of a vehicle, -Y is ‘near side or left and +Y is off side or right. So, X1000, Y-500, Z300 is 1m rearward of the datum, 500mm to the left of c/l and 300mm off the floor. We just now need to agree the datum reference point in space.
On second thoughts, forget that, I’ll get my coat!

Finally I can make an educated guess as to why the famed 'Y250 Vortex' which attracts so much attention in F1 design is so called!H7OB wrote: ↑Tue Aug 28, 2018 6:38 pmAt the risk of confusing things even further we could describe it’s position in the way it is referenced in current automotive design & engineering CAD geometry terms... ....I also wasn’t aware of said vortex so thank you, we are even! Every days’ a school day!
Sorry for wandering off topic. For what it’s worth I’ll keep my eyes open for cam covers!

Just another thought to add to the confusion. When referring to the cam covers or most anything else that is bilateral on the XK engine, the terms "intake" and "exhaust" are often used. Regardless as to whether the car is RHD or LHD, the intake and exhaust sides of the engine are the same.

Yeah, that works.
"First open the bonnet to check which is the intake side then remove the intake side rear wheel"......
What's wrong with doing what Jaguar do/did? Use Left and Right from the perspective of sitting in the car.

Nor the first time someone failed to read their wheel spinners, where Jaguar literally spell out the answer...on wire wheel cars at least.Series1 Stu wrote: ↑Fri Aug 24, 2018 10:44 pmThis is not the first time that someone has asked the question of what nearside means.
The real scandal is when people need the car’s left and right clarified, which is common (and precisely what near- and off- avoid). The only true no-no IMO is ‘driver’ and ‘passenger’ as a description of car sides, by posters who don’t list their location.
