Silly question maybe, but what is the "nearside"?
Is that the one with the Oil filler cap (which I have for sale  )

Can send all the high res pictures required, obviously.

Hi Jan

Nearside is a term used by us British to describe the left hand side of the car. Nearside meaning the side near the kerb (for right hand drive, of course).

I think we need to stop using this parochialism. It's confusing for the other six and a half billion people on the planet.

Have to disagree Stuart. The car was designed in Britain and built in Britain. We use British terminology. If others can't get the hang of our parochialisms then so be it. I for one am not going to start referring to the bonnet as the hood or the boot as the trunk or for that matter, the wings as the fenders, which I should if I avoid British terminology.....personally I see no reason not to be different from the other 6.5 billion and that is not to suggest in any way they are inferior or wrong in any way. We are all different...let's celebrate differences and the whole spectrum of terminologies....from which we all learn.

:yeahthat:

Buy a Shelby Mustang get used to talking about cubic inches; buy a Ferrari get used to talking Tipo"s. We should embrace the cultural moment in time rather than apologising for our heritage. It is our 'nearside' and if others are confused or do not like it they can opt out.

Well Julian, while I celebrate the differences of language and culture sometimes we need to be more clear and inclusive in the way we do things. This forum is an international one and the phraseology we use should be understandable for all of us.

I never said anyone should avoid British terminology, just show a little more consideration when it comes to the more confusing words and phrases. Where's the harm in that?

This is not the first time that someone has asked the question of what nearside means.

Regards
Stuart

Oh, please do remain British in all of your wonderful idiosynchracies. Learning the British terms for things, particularly those that pertain to the automobile is part of belonging to the British club of car nuts. It really doesn't take that much effort to learn what a bulkhead or a lorrie is and it's part of the fun of owning and enjoying a British car whether it's a classic or not.

And in North America we say passenger side and drivers side just to confuse things further,of course I know what nearside means having lived in the Uk for the first 35 years of my life.
