#1 Do not open windows....

Post by Bernie2015 » Sat Sep 29, 2018 3:54 pm

Does anyone remember seeing the sticker I saw on an E type window in the 60's once that said "do not open windows in speeds in excess of 100mph" ?

Not heard of it nor seen any mention in the Spare Parts or Service Bulletins. I seem to recall there was an apocryphal story of the rear window blowing out in the FHC at high speed but in practice it would not happen because of the turbulence produced over the FHC tailgate which would counteract the internal pressure.

There were problems with the side windows popping open at speed and Jaguar went through several modifications to stop it happening.

Bernie,

I recall reading something a while back about such a sign on one of the US car forums but I can't for the life of me remember which one. And I thought it was over 140 mph! The sign was allegedly attached above the rear view mirror in a Primrose coupe (Series 2?) IIRC. That might help you hunt down the reference.

As a matter of interest, and mildly related to windows blowing out:

What do 2+2 and Coupe owners do in the Eurotunnel carriages with their windows and the rear hatch?

I’ve only seen something resembling this as a joke sticker on a VW camper van.

Thanks for your input everyone. I know I saw it but it was in the days when I poked my head into car windows to see what the speedo went up to, so through the mists of time.....

I believe Studebaker installed a placard in the Avanti warning drivers to avoid opening the windows at some figure.

A few years ago I was travelling at considerable speed on a particularly hot day with my windows open when the headlining decided to unstick itself from the roof.

If it's any consolation, that happened to my mother back in 1975 in her Morris Marina Coupé, so your E-Type is in august company  !

There must have been a crosswind, as the Marina didn't go fast enough for that to happen, not even going downhill with carb icing!

 . I suspect BL production standards and QC (or lack of it) had more of a hand in it.

Horrid car.

In 1975 I swapped my TR4 for a morris marina, because it was more suitable for business :banghead:
