Hi all,

I have a 62 Series 1 E-type roadster. When I drive at speed with the hood up the hood is noisy... It is caused by the wind buffeting the hood. Looking through pinterest last night I read an article on a "series 1 jaguar E-type sets auction record at $467,500" They mentioned that this E-type has been restored to exact original. In the article they mentioned "The shot bag" a tube of lead pellets used to prevent the soft top from billowing in the wind....
Does anyone have any details/pictures of these said Shot bags as I would like to replicate this on my top to try to stop the billowing..

Does anyone have a picture of a soft top lead bag attached to the hood that they could attach please.

Thank you for the reply, it is easy for me but I am slightly confused 🤨
Is the lead weights sewn into the hood behind that square patch? Or does the long 5/8” sausage shaped weight shown in the earlier picture fit through it?

The long sausage lead bag is only for the S1 hood which is different to the S2 hood:

S1 with three bows (red circle shows location of the long lead bag):

The S2 has the rectangular patch glued to the hood with the lead weight in the blob:

S2 with two bows:

You will also see that the S1 hood 'sticks' are different. The S1 has three bows (extra one in the middle) whilst the S2 only has two.

Do you think the S1 long sausage lead bag can be fitted to an existing hood or does it need to be replaced. Mine is new but without the lead weight.

I don't think you can fit it to an existing hood as the sleeve needs to be stitched to the hood before the lead sausage bag can be pulled through. You may however be able to glue the smaller (but no less effective) lead pocket to your existing S1 hood, hence my suggestion. That is probably your best and cheapest option as it can be done in-situ otherwise you will need a complete new hood. Contact BAS or Aldridge and see if they can supply the S2 weight and enclosure.

It can be fitted to an existing one. Aldridge in Wolverhampton can do this although they don't tend to fit them when they do new hood trimming unless it is specifically requested - basically because some people don't like the stitching that can be seen. David's suggestion of glueing the "S2 patch" is a good one. You could even do this yourself as a temporary measure to see if that even fixes the issue you are experiencing.

An alternative I have found is to put a little extra material e.g. like a scarf on the top of the bows. Just enough to lift and make the soft top more taught and to cushion the roof material against the bows if it is vibrating against them. All depends really on the soft top and if it the material is attached in the same way as originally done or not etc. etc,

Thanks all, for all of your help. I will contact Aldridge, & BAS who fitted the new hood & will let you know what they say. I don't think anything will be done to it this side of spring though!!!!
Will definitely try the placing something on top of the bows though.

Bit late in responding and perhaps you have it sorted, but you can make up the sausage in the same headlining material and carefully glue it into place, leaving the ends open to draw through the weighted sausage with either a rod or a string left in the first sausage to attach it to. If you use a tailor's chalk to mark along the bow with the hood tight and in place and then taking the tension out of the hood to access the mark for gluing. Finally just sew the ends of the first sausage to complete the task.

If you don't want the hassle, just use some of the foam that you lag house water pipes with and fit over the bow, by carefully cutting it will hold in place and can be made to look respectable, but is easily detachable if you want people to look inside. A final option is the endless inner tube fitted to a lot of electric bikes these days, it can de placed along the bow, secured with some tape and you can inflate it as necessary until the flapping ceases and then deflated to remove it. A couple of pumps is all that's needed.

This last fix by the way is also good to seal along the front edge of the hood if there is either wind or water ingress.
