#1 John Quick RIP

Post by 44DHR » Wed Nov 07, 2018 11:48 am

I am sorry to announce that one of the most successful E Type drivers in period, John Quick passed away yesterday after a long illness.
In his famous dark metallic green 1962 Fixed Head Coupe, WOO 11, which is still being campaigned today, John was a prolific racer from 1964 until the early 1970’s. He was even mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records for 26 wins during the 1969 season.
Starting as a fairly stock 3.8 litre car, I’m sure he mentioned to me that he bought it from Roy Salvadori, he competed in International rallies, such as the 1965 Tulip Rally and Alpine Rally. The car then changed from being driven to events to being modified, necessitating being trailered to events as the car entered Prodsports and later pushing into the grey area of Modsports. In this form, the races in period at Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Thruxton with such drivers as Warren Pearce and John Burbidge were legendary. The modifications they continued to make to WOO 11, with it’s Weslake modified head, plus numerous other tweaks, including later even canting the engine mounts by 5 degrees to level the Weber’s, made for the fastest E type on the track.
John was a driver mixing with the top drivers of the time and told me tales of him and Graham Hill as they were both keen flyers in their own planes. He even drove for Marcos at Le Mans and was on the BARC Council.
I had invited John to be my guest at the Goodwood Members Meeting this year, but the cold weather unfortunately meant he could not make it to the circuit. It had been a wish to get him to see E types in present day historic racing and also working with it’s then owner Belgian Marc Devis, to reunite him with WOO 11, which was proudly still bearing his name on the side.
Still not now to be.
RIP John, a true racer and character.
Regards,
Dave

My Dad used to buy our family cars from Quicks of Chester. Was that his business?

Peter,
During the 1960’s and 70’s during his main racing career, John was a Director of Electrowares Ltd, an electrical wholesale company, based in Dulwich.
I have seen photos of WOO 11 being towed behind the signwritten Electrowares works transit van, pictured with his long term friend and mechanic Stuart Davey. He then moved to Surrey, so I’m not aware of a motor trade involvement in Chester.
Regards,
Dave
