#1 This does not feel right

Post by Lodgebaker » Sun Nov 25, 2018 2:28 pm

I read with interest in the E-Type club magazine just issued (169) that Philip went to the launch party of the new Woodham Mortimer company.

Spare a thought though for those of us that were customers of JD Classics upon whom this new company is basing all of its sales pitch and USP on. An overnight reincarnation of JD to Woodham Mortimer, which of course is great for the classic car industry and for all the staff involved whose jobs are now safe.

The only losers it seems are former JD Classic customers like me whose cars are apparently no longer covered by warranty or support of any kind. I purchased a full ground up resto of a series 1 roadster taking delivery in July just before the JD problems became public knowledge and have now been left out in the cold. In my case, i am having to pay costs which look likely to exceed £3000 to cover what were quite frankly school boy errors in the build and which i think we would all expect to be covered as breaking in issues. Woodham Mortimer though say they are not covering any costs for any cars sold on the run up to JD closing down - yet they advertise as though they have been going for years using all JD Classic successes etc to build an immediate brand.

Lets hope then for their success that they don't treat their new customers in the way they treat the customers who helped build the old JD brand upon which they rely so heavily! I would steer clear of them.

Contact Angus Moss at Moss Jaguar as he is probably the best E-Type specialist in the UK and may be able to help.

Typical pre- pack arrangement.

Leaves an unpleasant taste. However, in these days of social media power, I’d suggest the bigger fuss you and others can make, the better.....

This company will fail if enough previous customers make enough noise... “goodwill” goes both ways.

As an example, I’d not touch them with someone else’s...... culture runs deep in a business and they are tainted to a very deep level.

As to the E type clubs support, it’s making me consider my position.......

You need to change your consumer laws - if a company takes over another one. even with a new name then the obligations of the old company should still apply.

No it wouldn't . No one is obliged to purchase the assets of a failed limited company . The limit on liability is to limit the liability of the existing shareholders at the date of default , not of any subsequent entity who takes on the assets .... but I may say that I am surprised at Porter in any way lending credence to this Woodham Mortimer outfit

The statement from the administrators makes damning reading...

From what I've heard about Gales keeping people happy isn't a core skill. He's a money man.

Thanks - my name is Paul Baker. I understand that this is different to the e-type club just thought most of us would get the magazine so a useful way to introduce my subject - sorry if i have done the wrong thing. will work out how to put pic of my jag and name for future posts.

Image

Picture of my car attached i think.

It is 444WXN a 1966 JD Sport series 1 4.2 roadster sold in New York early 1967 and in long term ownership in Washington by a Skip and Dana Downing from November 1979 to end 2011, when passed thro two garages on way to JD Classics who imported it to the UK in April 2013 when they then commenced a lengthy renovation including reconditioned the engine to high torque, 5 speed manual gearbox, upgraded brakes and electric power steering. Sport suspension, alloy radiator and electric cooling fan. Colour Opalescent Gunmetal grey. Car number IE13355.

I look forward to being a member of the Forum.

Welcome to the forum Paul.

The car looks very nice, it's not the one featured in their photos "recently finished by ourselves"
by any chance? Converted to RHD. https://woodham-mortimer.com/Cars/For-S ... d526a380ce

Sorry to hear about your lack of after sales care that must have taken some of the initial joy out of E type ownership. As mentioned Angus comes highly recommended and perhaps for small snagging faults, post a question on here.

Paul, welcome to the forum. Lots of very friendly and helpful advice here. Plus some good humour from time to time. I'd add my recommendation to speak to Angus, you'll get an honest appraisal, just don't be too disappointed if more than you could wish for comes to light. Which sadly might happen judging by your experiences at JD.

Not all of us are members of the E Type Club and as has been pointed out here by Rory (post number 15), this is the best club to belong to: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12299

Good luck with getting your car sorted and more importantly, enjoyed!!

Welcome Paul, this place is a fountain of useful knowledge and helpful people.

The melt-down of JDC ? What a cess-pit.

That Administrator's report makes great reading , I loved the "reverse-maths" (see page 30) that enabled them to justify exactly and precisely £2.000.000 by jiggling with "Fee Estimates" including fourteen different hourly rates, and time spent to one decimal place, all shaken in a bag until the nice round figure popped out.

Even Private Eye have never thought of that.

Thanks for all the replies - page 30 what a hoot!

Yes i will speak with Angus as we get it sorted. At the moment think i have it in hand with New Forest Jaguar team who are great by the way. Main problems i had was a petrol tank that had paint pickling because they put gasket on to fresh gloss paint so it has been removed and old paint removed, fuel tank cleaned out, painted and prepared correctly and now replaced. Main issue though is a fairly hefty leak from both sides of the differential because it seems now that is has been taken apart that the flange is very pitted and is now having to be laser treated to smooth it out before refitting and being sealed up again. Only other issue was an oil sender unit that has had to be replaced and i think some soft paintwork round the headlight rims. All now being dealt with very well at New Forest Classics but at a cost that would normally have been done i think under warranty. Don't get me wrong it is a great car - just did part of the Prostrate round britain in it and it ran perfectly but i just get annoyed every time i see the Woodham Mortimer advertising - AND YES that is my car that is referred to in that advert which is still live on their site!

Anyway i will stop moaning now and enjoy the Forum.

Hi Paul,

I had a feeling that was your car. The reason I asked about the car in the picture is Woodham Mortimer are advertising in writing that they were responsible for restoring the car yet don’t seem to feel responsible for any warranty work.
Anyway at least you are getting it sorted. I like the seats by the way.

Hi Simon the seats are Mazda Mk1 MX5. I put similar in my TR5 they are very comfortable indeed and fit well into an E-type.

I thought as much Paul. I recognised the car because I’d actually saved pictures of the seats to copy because I really liked how they had been trimmed.
Mine’s gunmetal but will have a red interior.
