#1 Lindner Nocker Low Drag Pictures.....Help Please

Post by E600 » Fri Dec 21, 2018 6:52 pm

I am starting the build on my new Low Drag shell and realised quickly I can do it wrong whilst trying to do it right. Has anyone got pictures of the bulkhead with fixtures for 4868 WK. Indeed any detailed pictures would help.
TIA
Pat

Probably worth adding Porter's 'Ultimate E-Type' to your Christmas list then. It has about 30 pages devoted to each car with lots of photos. A good read as well!

+1. Incredible book. James Smith at RS Panels built several identical replicas for CMC but I doubt he will help since I would assume the knowledge to be confidential and part of the contract.

This theory seems to come up from time to time but as far as I am aware is quite wrong.

Hi.

When I visited CMC in about 2007 they were most definitely rebuilding the low drag E themselves. They definitely did not have panels coming from anywhere else and judging by the skill I saw, they had absolutely no need for anyone else’s input. They had some major equipment, such as a huge industrial spot welder and they were panel beating the damaged panels one by one to perfection before welding together. They were unable to preserve some parts of certain panels, but rather than scrap they, they melted them down to make welding rods, partly because they had difficulty in obtaining welding rods (for TIG welding) of the correct alloy, apparently rare today, but also for the sake of originality, reusing the original material. I took some photos, but this was way before the bulkhead was built, so not much help for the replica subject of thi thread.

Regards,

I heard this car being run up at an E Type club weekend at Philip Porter's place. Sounded awesome.
Nearly a disaster though.
Someone moved "CRY" by hand, and didn't put the handbrake on properly. There was suddenly a lot of shouting, and "CRY" was rolling forwards down a slope straight towards the Lindner. Someone ran across and managed to lean in and put the handbrake on just in time.
Could have been a costly coming together.

Picture bellow of the two in proximity before the event!

Thank you all for your input, especially the bulkhead photos. Interesting to see all 3 fluid reservoirs the same size and venting into a 4th

He writes his father worked in the Lindner team...

You must contact James Smith At RS Panels. He is so helpful, and seems to produce Low Drag shells for whoever wants one. The CMC Lindner car was their own project. Also, bear in mind it is RS Panels who made the shells for the Lightweight E-types made by Classic Jaguar. Happy Christmas!

Hi Pat,
The material is NS4, not readily available these days. Until very recently NS3 (IIRC) has been used in all quality alloy bodies copying the LWE theme. Until the 6, or is it 7, or even 8😏😏, new bodies by Jaguar which I believe stuck out for NS4.
NS4 does not like to be worked too hard and is prone to cracking, hence the many strengthening panels applied in period to the most active cars. It is widely viewed by the experts (me not being one of them) that the Linder car will now always be very susseptable to stress cracking because of the measures taken to reshape the structural panels, not much option given the state of it!
RS Panels painted the car for CMC and I understand made one exact copy (initially planned to be more than 1) seen about as 70 WK.
As for bulkhead detail, quite a few differences from a "STD" LWE, due to the slide throttle and over the frame exhaust. All LWE's have the overflow 4th reservoir bottle.
The factory changes to the car where copied from 4WPD, but it didn't get all the mods, but it did get some extras of its own such as the lowered chin.
Andrew Turvey did his research well.
