#1 Personalised number plates

Post by malcolm » Fri Jan 18, 2019 2:21 pm

We all know they're illegal if the spacing has been altered at all, wrong coloured studs used, etc. But everyone who buys therm does just that, otherwise why buy them?
So, how come I get about 3 emails every week from the DVLA advertising their sale of "personalised" number plates? DVLA encouraging people to break the law?? Seems that the commercial arm of the DVLA is a bit at odds with it's government main purpose.

The DVLA do it for two reasons - a) it makes them a lot of money yet they retain ownership and b) the Police love them as they can be easily recalled by other motorists and pedestrians.

You're certainly right about the money David. Not so sure about the police loving them though. Although the public may recall them, the police don't like them unless, like Steve, they are displayed correctly (Legally) That's because ANPR systems can't read them when they aren't correctly displayed, and police are increasingly using ANPR .

One thing to note re personal plates.....make sure you tell your insurance company that in the event of a total loss claim on your vehicle that you want to keep the plate......if not the car is written off and the insurance company own the vehicle/plate.....you need conformation from your insurer befor any incident......dont wait till you claim it may be too late and you lose your plate..... The ANPR software can now read any plate, including the silver on black of the E-Type and the square front plates of Rice Rockets, plus it logs/photos of any plates it can't make sense of and passes them for human verification. Once the plate has been decoded/verified it is put back into the ANPR software to avoid further errors. Ditto the latest generation of SPECS average speed cameras which are also networked together so you are timed into and out of an entire area regardless of route. Even my new smart doorbell has face recognition and learns very quickly!

That's interesting David - they've obviously developed the system. I was at a presentation from the police where this was explained, but that was some years ago!

My personalised plate is spaced correctly, and with 5 digits rather than 6 (prefix style plate) on a plain background (aside from the supplier’s details and BS mark) I think it looks just fine. Feel free to disagree

But then I guess it depends on what you’re trying to say with your plate!

Controversial I know, but I hate the off-Centre plate with the GB section on one side and a border. Same goes for these raised plate style fonts you get on Demon Plates or something similar. Less is more, and symmetry is important.

I'm clearly far too compliant, Steve! My Dad was a police officer - I probably don't have excuses. Consistency makes for a nice display too. (Note to self: get a new picture with the Colt on!)

Have to disagree Malcolm, not everyone buys them to make them illegal ? :wow:

We have three personal plates in our household, all spaced correctly and all perfectly legal.

Motivation for purchase is always for different reasons for everyone.

One of ours is a fun plate to us, it is very easy to remember, cost peanuts and we have owned it since way back beyond and it is has always been on my wife's car - she wont part with it !
One of ours spells our surname when you look at it and is on my son's car and is still correctly legal.
The final one is my one, which I bought at a DVLA auction, is my initials and it's a early plate(5 digits) which had previously never been released by DVLA, bought for my 60th birthday 3 years ago to celebrate as something special to me, an investment and has been now professionally valued at double what I paid for it which is currently on the E but will come off when I sell it to be put back on it's original Uk plate.

We like them and all three plates continue to get the occasional positive comments when people see them for the first time which is an added bonus as it usually makes people smile.

I feel it can enhance a car but it has to be done without being crass. I know its subjective, generally if its about the car I am OK with it, here was one of mine now sold with the car.....

It’s an interesting school of thought. With classic cars, I do prefer to see them on their original or age-related number plates, partly because that’s what they should be on and it completes the look of the car. “ Modern” cars tend to lend themselves better to being personalised... or am I just used to seeing them? Will we be saying the same thing in 30 years from now about “modern” cars?

Incidentally, as much as I love my plate, the two standard issue and original registrations I’ve had (on the Corsa and the Colt) were both quite “nice” numbers. Particularly round me where the sequential FG tends to start the plate off (or FP, or anything F for the DVLA’s Nottinghamshire/Lincolnshire regs). Or is that a familiar thing again?

I do love definitive answers!

Personalised number plates are great. How else would Surrey divorcees be able to tell their Range Rover Evoques apart in the gym car park.....
