Longhorn (Cow Horn) Transition Exhaust
#1 Longhorn (Cow Horn) Transition Exhaust
Howdy E Type Lovers
My 1968 Series 1 FHC LHD came with the “Longhorn” exhaust. It is my understanding that this widened-pipe exhaust was fitted to Series II cars due to the reconfigured bumper/taillights. I think it’s ugly and not streamlined so plan on replacing them with a stainless Series 1. One does not see the Longhorn style often so wondered what you think of this style.
Thanks in advance.

Correct.
Plenty of discussion on here and you will find that they are not popular.
Several of us, including me, have fitted the straight 3.8 resonators to our Series 2 cars.
On a Series 1 car that doesn't even have the challenge of altered rear lights to meet US regulations I'd have thought that fitting Series 2 splayed resonators would be a hanging offence.

Nothing wrong with the correct tail pipes fitted to the correct car......but its personal choice...if you dont like them than change them.......I have them on my S2 2+2 and there are many others that have them.....we are not in the minority.....Steve

The Series 2 tail pipes were designed to clear the lower hanging US license plate.

I have the "cowhorn" pipes on my 2+2, and am leaving them. I tend to agree that the straight pipes look better, but there again I might say that the covered headlights look better and fit them, and that wider tyres look better and fit them, but where would I end up? Certainly not with an original car. I'm not fixated on originality; mine's not a concourse car! But overall I tend to think I should leave her the way she was designed. There again, I don't have problems with people making changes. Each to their own way of enjoying their E.

Hi Malcom
Agee with you completely. To each his/her own. For some strange reason, my 1.5 Series car were fit with them. Perhaps it was the transition to the Series 2 or there were extras in the Parts bin. I believe they are original to the car but they may have replaced the factory close pipes during its life time.
All part of the adventure. For the theory that they were designed to clear US license plates, wow, I’ve never seen a US plate that large and hang that low. A current Washington state plate fits very nicely in the spot provided and doesn’t come close to either “Horn”.
Thanks for everyone’s comments.

My series 1.5 came with them. They were the second thing I removed - after the AMCO bars !
Series 1 FHC purchased 40 years ago. Courted my wife in it.
Series 1 2+2 when the kids were small now sold.
Series 1.5 OTS in opalescent maroon, Californian car. My retirement present.

I think I read somewhere that having the tailpipes out to the corners helped reduce the chance of back leakage of exhaust fumes into the cabin via the rear quarter lights. Something to do with vortices spilling off the rear corners of the FHC?

Hey Tim Wood
Sounds like good advice & I most likely will be doing the same thing.
Thanks
