Donald Campbell E-Type

Agree with that Steve. I can’t imagine much was usable from the original tbh. Aluminium is difficult to rework and I don’t think the engine is original? Still great to see ‘it’ back though!

His body was recovered with the boat in May 2001.PeterCrespin wrote: ↑Wed Aug 15, 2018 11:00 pmI assume Donald’s body was recovered, so am not sure how come Bluebird’s location was unknown?
They said that about the Lindner bodyshell but CMC managed to recover all but a small box of bits.
The main hull of K7 was intact, only the front had broken off and that was located a few months later. The boat still contained fuel in the engine fuel lines. They claim they refurbished or repaired almost everything including the Bristol Orpheus engine as all the parts were in remarkably good condition thanks to the underwater environment at Coniston.
They had a choice - leave it as a macabre wreck for rubber necker's to gawp at or put it back in operation as a tribute. Personally I think they did the right thing. Oddly such controversy did not seem to surround the Lindner E-Type.

I'm still unsure.
Some things are best left alone - at least by recovering Campbell they were able to lay him to rest properly. Someone will have found him / K7 eventually and the world would know then. Not good news for anyone but trophy hunters. They ruin the peace and memories for everyone else.
But at the same time, it is a credit to the project for restoring her, but it seems a shame that she'll do a few runs and then go into a museum. Low-speed runs on Coniston in the summer would create a lot of interest, as with any historic plane or boat, or even cars on display where they belong.
I'm glad SOMETHING has been done to look after K7 though.

Ditto David , Donald was found shortly after the boat was located in 2000/1, remarkably well preserved by the cold water temp that creates some unique wax process.PeterCrespin wrote: ↑Wed Aug 15, 2018 11:00 pmI assume Donald’s body was recovered, so am not sure how come Bluebird’s location was unknown?
He had good taste in sports cars. Wonder if Lyons agreed a discount?
Is this a test Pete ? , discount? , you probably know , yes there were Jaguar connections .
Norman Buckley was on good terms with William Lyons and Lofty , Norman built and raced the boat" Miss Windermere" , Jaguar supplied the engines "D" type spec XK ,
Donald and Norman were friends and both K7 club members, Norman was timekeeping on the day of the crash.
