#1 Norman’s needs

Post by PeterCrespin » Wed May 01, 2019 9:07 am

Dear Friends of Norman Dewis OBE,

Our good friend Norman Dewis is not in the best of health at the moment and we are looking at a few ways to help Norman enjoy his time ahead. With this in mind we are creating a Trust Fund for Norman. The Trust Deed has been prepared and duly executed by Hopkins Solicitors LLP in their offices, which are based in Nottinghamshire and the Trust Fund will be governed by the terms of the Trust Deed and the appointed Trustees are John Butterworth and Tony O'Keeffe.

Norman still lives at home by himself and the money raised will be used to provide comforts for him. This will include personal care and home help to assist with housework, laundry, gardening and cleaning etc.

We are approaching many of Norman's friends to see if they would be willing to donate £100 (or more or less) to the Norman Dewis OBE Trust Fund.

Any donations can be paid into the Trust Fund account. Details are NatWest Bank, account number 15094030 and sort code 010085. Please make the reference Norman Dewis OBE Trust Fund.

The funds will be fully audited and managed in accordance with the Trust Deed for Norman’s personal benefit. Any surplus funds left after the death of Norman will be donated to Hope House Hospice. This is a charity very close to Norman which looks after terminally ill children and this is his wish.

Norman is fully aware of what we are doing and he would like to thank all the Jaguar Family for taking the time in doing this for him.

Due to GDPR it is not possible to identify names that this email has been sent to. However, if you would like to pass this on to friends of Norman, please do so.

Kindest regards
Tony

Yes I got it yesterday too and so did several serious people I know - it was not sent to a true ‘mass’ mail list AFAIK. Scammers don’t usually give their genuine contact details though, right?

Doubtless Norman will be on some kind of works pension and a small royalty income etc. but grtting extensive care to enable a full life in your own home may be beyond his means? I suspect the XF I saw in his car port was a company car.

Anyway, just passing it on. He’s not a well man, if you get my drift....

FWIW, an American friend wrote to me to say what a disgrace if poor Norman’s friends had to solicit money to “keep him alive.”

Having kept an eye out for an old friend until his death at 103, I can reassure American listers that in Europe generally and UK specifically, there is never a point where core medical care is a financial issue for the elderly. However, provision of social care and support for independent living varies by local authority, once basic normal things like ‘meals on wheels’ are provided with or without a contribution from the persons. There comes a point where a live-in carer and house-keeper for example, may be at the cost, whereas the state would cover, say, 30 minute visits to get them up, wash and dress and feed them, then another 30 mins, say, for lunch feeding and 30 mins putting them to bed. Then there may be other nice-to-have services like shopping or chauffeur to church or walks or entertainment etc. Also big new TVs, home gym equipment etc. that would be the kind of extras I’m sure the fund is designed to cover

I must emphasize I have no comment on Norman’s personal health or needs, buy am just keen to reassure those in other countries who may be needlessly worried about some kind of desperate plight he might be in.

For overseas enthusiasts, there are now the references needed for paying into foreign accounts, depending which system you use:

IBAN. GB79NWBK01008515094030.

BIC/ Swift No NWBKGB2L.

If it still sounds a bit off a faff (really?), then be aware there will be a GoFundMe page soon.

For those still unsure, I discussed this with Tony O'Keeffe over eight months ago and the delay since has been due to getting the trust documents properly set up. I duly donated last week. We all know that there are people out there who could have donated 100 times the amount asked without batting an eyelid, but the idea was for us all to show our love and respect for dear Norman. So I do hope people will step up and be counted. I shall be speaking to Tony shortly and will keep you all updated.

For those more used to giving online, there is now a GoFundMe page here:

https://www.gofundme.com/f/norman039s-needs?

Designed primarily for North American donors, who often get charged for 'wire transfers', it can also be used by anyone who can't be bothered with the banking rigmarole that donation can sometimes involve. I will liaise with Tony to make sure transfers to the UK Trust are scheduled regularly, since that is the central fund. Feel free to pass the above link to people who might want to contribute and, if you have, thank you.

When setting up the fund (which I have never done before) GoFundMe have a default target of $1000, which has already been exceeded. Please don't take that to mean your donation is not needed. I assume the total will fluctuate as I transfer money to the Trust, but the fund is aimed at helping Norman live an ongoing comfortable life, not accumulate a mountain of cash. Even when he is no longer with us, the balance goes to his choice of children's hospice, so not a penny will be wasted.

Thanks

Pete
