Number plate size
#1 Number plate size
Hello
I have at last received the number plate from Dvlc for my S1 roadster
Can anyone tell me the correct size for the rear plate please and who is a reliable manufacturer?
Also am I likely to be pulled for putting the front one on the bonnet? Is this desirable anyway?
Many thanks
Paul

Hi,
Just had mine through as well - I went to Tippers who provide a 7x21" rear plate with old style font for the front stick on. Very pleased.

The question about the E-Type front number plate has been circulating for years. The JDC asked the DVLA for a definitive statement on the subject and they did get back with a definitive reply. Can't find the article but basically the DVLA think the E-Type was given dispensation in 1961 to display the number plate on the bonnet and "custom and practice" means it can continue to do so providing the colours and fonts comply with the appropriate legislation. They also say the only reason this has been queried in recent times was because of the increased use of ANPR and speed cameras by Police. The E-Type number plate is considered visible by these systems so no action will be taken.
There is a Jaguar service bulletin detailing exactly where the front plate should be mounted.

Depending on the year of your car you need raised characters in period font on the rear (try Tippers, ACE Plates, Paul McNaughton or Framton's for ACE style) and for the front you need to ensure you get a period font rather than the computer generated modern font that some supply (yes, you Frampton's!). Tippers will hand cut the characters in the correct font to the correct size depending on car year. The photos above clearly illustrate the different styles of font. Front plate is period correct, rear plate has a modern font.
Go with ACE cast aluminium characters if you can but be warned they are rare and expensive! Last rear plate I had cost about £95 - Tippers will give you a quote. There are plastic reproductions which are cheaper. https://www.tippersvintageplates.co.uk/ ... ent&part=2
Paul Mcnaughton is very helpful and even provides the correct logo: http://autojumbler.ie/
Ace Peak Plates also can supply cast alloy characters: http://www.acepeakplates.com/
As for colour, IMHO silver characters look best on metallic colours whilst white works better on solid colours, but your choice.

+1 for Tippers. The rear plate they made for my S1 fitted perfectly.

In terms of size for the OTS, check with your chosen supplier, but I’d be surprised if it was different to the FHC.
I had a quote from tippers for Ace aluminium characters, but at £140 it was not really justified. Mine came in at half that and look fine to me.

Wow, looks good, but also looks enormous! I think it's probably the way the photo was taken. Wouldn't look so big if you stood back then zoomed in.

Morning all
I need new plates for my S2 as got a new reg number. Having looked through the topic I can't see anywhere a mention of the front plate for the bonnet and they don't mention it on the links to Tippers and Ace. Can anyone help me where to buy one? The rear plate is fine, will probably buy from Ace.
Thanks
John
