#1 Wires & tyres

Post by rswaffie » Sat Sep 14, 2019 7:59 pm

Hi All,
I’m looking to change the black painted (over red powder coat - yes really) wires that came with my 3.8 FHC.
I am going for chrome wires.
The current wheels & tyres have only 150 miles use and I want to retain the 205/70 vred sprint classic tyres as they are like new.
The tyre size suggests these are 6” rims, does that sound correct? I only ask as there is no issue with fitting in the spare wheel well and no issues with the rear bump stops, which I thought were problems with bigger rims/tyres.

Richard, please fit 185 tyres, they are so much nicer and what would have been fitted to your car when new :banghead:

Original rims are 15"x5". Your current tyres will fit them fine.

Some prefer a 6" or even 6.5" rim; again your tyres will fit them as well.

Obviously you want curly hubs. There are a couple of choices with spoke patterns; original and triple laced. Again it is mostly a question of personal choice.

Spokes can come chromed or stainless. Personally I have always gone with stainless.

Lots of info here http://www.mwsint.com/custom/FitmentGui ... A&CarYear=

Over the years I have found that I get the best deal on rims from SC Parts. This is because they have consistently offered matched pricing but much better freight costs. I do not buy ANYTHING else from them.

Hi Richard, I have 15x6" with 185/15 vreds on my S2 and like these a lot, no issue whatsoever with the spare storage.
If you want to part with your set of black wires please let me know!

Hi Ralph,
Once I’ve got the chromes, I will be selling the black wires, so I’ll give you first refusal - shipping to Belgium may be a bit expensive though!

Hi Steve
I’ve had a good look on the spare, but can’t see anything- maybe covered by powder coating and paint.

Hi Richard

I think you might find that a 6" wide wheel won't fit in the spare wheel well so if you go for 6" you may want to keep a standard size wheel as a spare.

That's what I'm doing.

Regards
Stuart

Yes, although the tyre gets in the way so can only measure from the outer rim, rather than from the inner bead edge, however a rough go with a caliper gauge suggests it’s either 5.5 or 6. As there are no boot space issues, prob a 5.5.

I have 6.5" rims on one of my cars. No trouble with the spare fitting with 205/65/15 tyre.
