#1 Repairing quarter light frame

Post by George4422 » Sat Feb 29, 2020 3:24 pm

Hi,

The right hand side quarter panel window frame on my 1962 FHC requires repair where the two holes for the catch are.
I have looked at getting a replacement frame (none available) so does anyone know if the material (brass?) can be repaired and if anyone has experience of such a repair procedure?

Many thanks,

George

Hi George,

I am fairly certain it is brass and your picture would appear to confirm this.

It can be repaired, but it might be difficult to flow brass into that area without blowing away the parent metal.

If it were me, I would try cleaning up the edges and clamp a piece of steel to the back; I don’t think steel would stick to the puddle unless it was fluxed and if it did, it could always be ground off afterwards.

If you don’t have the equipment to do it yourself, I am sure any machine shop or competent welder would be able to do this.

Find someone who brazes for a living and get them to do it.

Its no problem to repair the damage - by silver soldering a small piece of brass in and re-drilling the holes. If you want me to do it for you please send a PM.
You will have to have the whole frame re-chromed of course.

I have a spare right hand quarter light if you're interested.

Clear glass, the frame is good although it would benefit from new chrome, especially if you're going for a concours finish.

Just an update to say that Barrie (Tinworm) has repaired the frame and made a splendid job!
Thanks again Barrie and if anyone needs any brasswork repaired, I can highly recommend him.

Beautiful work. How did you get the finish to match so well without the whole piece being rechromed?

Thanks, what you see is just the natural colour of the brass - and it will still need re-chroming.
