Petrol effect on non compatible pipes

Hi all, I've read in numerous places that petrol can erode rubber pipes if they are not specified for this use, particularly now that we have ethanol additives.

I needed a piece of pipe to run from my petrol tank breather pipe up to the filler tube, it's about 10" long and I had a perfect piece, great I thought, that will do. I had read on here somewhere that you should check by immersing a piece of the pipe in fuel for 24 hours to see if it will be ok, so I cut a piece off and soaked it overnight.

The next morning, after just 7 or 8 hours this was the effect..... the pipe had swollen to about twice its previous size and I guess it would be destroyed in just a few more

So, be warned, don't be tempted!!

Yes, I tried a pint of petrol just in case!!!

I did this experiment a few years back when I found out I managed to buy the last length of gates 10mm in tank submerged fuel hose in the country , I had enough for what I needed , just , but decided to see what new fuet would do , so in an old metal oil can I left 3 lengths of hose , one just a bit of heater hose . An unleaded petrol hose , and some of the old school clear with cord running through it ,submerged in unleaded , annnnnd the two rubber hoses were destroyed within a month, swollen with bits flicking off and turned the petrol 'Gas' black , and the old school clear still complete just very very soft ,the one still capable of holding fuel who'd of guessed that ......... I still wouldn't ever use it though
