Hi Rob...as far as im aware Heritage work on a confirm or deny system....they will not fill in the blanks without you supplying registration documents and other info..engine /gearbox numbers......its quite easy to buy a body shell that still has its body number....and quite easy to change a body number its only a rivited on tag......if Heritage were to give out chassis numbers then anyone could create a "lost car"......very strange that there is no registration docs, vin plate, stamped vin, engine, gearbox......so my assumption is that your body,s identity could well be existing on another E or Replica car....... So even if you find out the correct chassis number to match the body......there could be another E out there that has the same identity..it might not even be registeted on xkedata and might only come to light in years to come.........I have not heard of dvla registering a car with only the chassis/body number...and they are now doing inspections to check authenticity.....Steve
Hi Steve

The car does have a stamped vin
Its the tag and engine and gearbox thats missing

I want to make it into a race car

Ive owned a S1 roadster and S3 roadster for many years

I have no problem with anyone wanting to view the car

Rob

Hi Rob....i have just re read your posts...i missed the part where you said that you had picked out the chassis number and can see its an E and not an R.......so you do have body and chassis numbers for a S1 car.....Steve

I've just seen the 1E200xx. Unfortunately that throws my 151car theory out!! So we are back to a series 1 body, a Series 1.5 or 2 picture frame and a Series 1 chassis number.

The plot thickens, do keep us posted Rob, I'm intrigued. Don't worry about posting the full chassis number, I wouldn't post mine either on an open forum.

Thought I would add pictures to give general idea of the condition of the car
I do have the bonnet but its rusty in places. I have most of trim but its very poor

I need a screen if anyone has one kicking around

I've put up a picture of bulkhead to show the original colour

Many thanks

Hello Rob, do you have any documentation for the car at all? Just asking because to remove and replace a picture frame and bonnet support frame could be to repair damage or it could be to conceal that a car has been stolen (chassis number stamping on picture frame) - especially if the data plate was missing too. I hope not but it needs to be mentioned.

mind how you go

Rob ,

From your photo's the external bulkhead servo pipes also date this to an early 4.2 , do you have the pedal box ? it should have the steel folded plate but with the later 4.2 master cylinder.
There are many other relevant features noted in the reference books.
Electrical items could also help date the car ---wiper motor etc and smaller items like flasher units .
If you are a member of the JEC it might be useful to contact them , they will help and possibly liaise with Heritage.
Hope all turns out ok,

Cant see a mounting for the rad fan motor which would be on the frame.
So I think it’s either a differing frame or a later car.
External vacuum pipes were later I think.
Flat hub wheels - again nothing definitive but maybe builds a picture

I have now received the heritage certificate for the car
The vin and body no are correct but the engine and gearbox details are left blank saying information not provided

Anyway this is good news as I am told the certificate is proof of age and is accepted by DVLA
So now i have applied for registration document

The car is an October 1964 4-2

I have a very good 4-2 engine from a 1976 XJ6 but need a gearbox
I have been offered a rebuilt MOD box from a mk2
Will it fit ???

Or any recommendations on choice of gearbox

Best regards

Rob

No, the gearbox with OD will not fit, and even if it would the ratios are too wide for a SWB E type. For authenticity , you need an EJ series box ( first of the all-synchro E boxes , or a KE ( later with slightly wider ratios ) or if all else fails a KJS ( S2 2+2) box. You could also - less desirably because of the wider ratios - use a saloon all-synchro non-OD box - these usually have numbers beginning JCN or similar

Also , you must ensure that you use a 4.2 bellhousing, a 4.2 flywheel and a 4.2 pre-engaged starter ( or modern hi-torque equivalent if you must !) with spacer - you cannot pick and mix 3.8 and 4.2 parts between these and will have endless problems with starter engagement if you do

So while I know the general view is that you can't fit an overdrive box in a S1 or 2 FHC...you can....my S1 3.8 FHC has an OD box, I think, from an S type....small amount of tunnel work was done by a previous owner to get it to fit but my car is proof it can be done  My old moss box is in the garage

The gearbox can be found for a couple of thousand, the sump is another thou (plus oil pick up pipe) The flywheel should be a 133 tooth type (saloon Flywheels can be lightened to a more E-type weight) The carbs are expensive cheapest option would be a pair of XJ6 HD8s inc manifold. The mk10 420G carbs won't fit. Plenty to find -

good luck

Im not to worried about sump
I will cut it and weld it to what i need

Its the gearbox im worried about
Ive got the XJ 4-2 engine early 70,s unit on twin carbs
(May swap later to triple webers)

I can buy a mk10 gearbox thats got O/D
Im told it a short box and will have E type ratios ?
But will it fit, I dont mind minor tunnel mods

Hi Rob.....even fitting an o/d box into a 2+2 you will need to ease the tunnel a bit for the speedo drive.....your in a reasonable position with no engine gearbox fitted.....so offer one up into position and see what needs to be done...Steve
