#1 Grass track racing E-types 1989 Lancashire.

Post by Stevejaguar » Thu Jan 14, 2021 11:09 am

Hi All , I have found two photos of e types racing on a grass field. They were taken by a friend around 1989 probably in Atherton Lancashire. He tells me that he was on his way to Bolton and heard lots of engines so went to investigate. He believes it was an event organised by a local auto sports club
If anyone thinks they would be of interest to them, PM me and I will send them.
Steve

You can post them under Collectors Corner: E-Type Period and Glamour pictures: as a reply on this existing historic picture thread on page 90
Be interested to see eType's grass track racing :wow:

Here is another photo from my friend Peter. Sorry about the quality.

Taken from the overbridge at Oulton Park on Saturday 28 September 1969 (or possibly 1968).
Again if anyone owns either of these cars PM me and I will post to you.

Steve

I cannot imagine them being a very good grass track car. But I could be wrong?

8448TJ was John Cuff's car bought new by him direct from the factory in 1963. It is recorded as being transferred to the Competion Dept before delivery to have work done.
John was a big friend of my Dad, Gordon Brown of Five Barred Gate Garage, John immediately started competing in it. It was progressively and exclusively developed by Dad to full semi lightweight spec, all be it in a FHC body. Wide Angle steel blocked engine (IIRC acquired by Dad from a Speed boat, Full D spec) ZF 5 Speed box, full LWE suspension, Alloy bonnet, doors and tailgate etc. John was a quick driver and travelled far and wide in the UK competing successfully in the car before selling it, then buying a back a short time later and then finally parted with it into the Modsports arena, in which period I think the picture is taken.
Red Rose Motors fielded a 3 car team for an event at Oulton Park, 1966 I think, in which 8448TJ teamed up with the two other team cars, 4WPD & YVH210, they did OK IIRC :yellow: .
I was too young to remember much but family cine films and Dads records show we spent a lot of time with E-types at Oulton Park.

Re the etypes racing at Oulton Park pictur posted by Stevejaguar; the leading car is the John Wilson car , sometimes carried reg no PBC112, this car is still active in hill limbs driven by Hayden Spedding and Chris Mason, the car has had considerable success in Modsports racing driven by, Ted Worswick,David Moore,Brian Mills,John Myescough, and Fred Cliffe before selling it to Hayden Spedding in the late 70s. I raced against this car in modsports races when driven by Mills,Myescough and Cliffe 1974-1977, I also competed against it in hill limbs with my second modsports E in the 1980s.
The John Cuff car pictured following was bought by Fred Cliffe, During a rebuild Fred had the outer body shell skinned in alloy in the early 90s, Fred engaged me to install the engine and set the suspension up, this preparation work was rewarded by wins at Mallory Park and at Donnigton, a meeting when I was invited to Demonstrate the ex Warren Pearce Etype 310Wk which I had rebuilt/restored for the then owner Ron Lea, this is another car I have raced against when owned by Brian Murphy and later by Fred Cliffe. Mistakenly my car has been described as the ex Alan Leeson car, actually although owning that car I only raced the car that was my fathers ex road Etype reg JNU399C,my father ran the ex leeson car 666DUL after installing a 7litre Ford V8 he sold the car in 1985, cheers a bit of history from someone who was actually there taking part in real club racing,John Oxborough.
