#1 Security Alarm

Post by ALAN COCHRANE » Fri Feb 26, 2021 11:27 am

Hi Everyone

I've had a Tracker unit fitted to the E-Type for five years at a cost of £340. It's the version that is battery powered with a five year life. I have now been quoted £890 to have it renewed! I politely declined.
So it's recommendation time again please.

Cheers

Blimey, some battery! Who are the firm you used Alan? Wondering if I'm going to get that at some stage!

I fitted a motorcycle alarm to my E soon after I bought it. Small, easily hidden, does all that is required. And I have a cheap as chips tracker, the sort parents are encouraged to insert in their kids backpacks. It sends text messages when asked where it is. Only ongoing cost for the tracker is to occasionally top up a SIM card.

You can get a whole new tracker for a 1/4 of that cost.....IMO an alarm is of limited use...

Www.classic-tracker.co.uk for example

Malcolm

The company is called Tracker-www.tracker.co.uk. To be fair the cost was for a whole new unit not just the battery so the price was a real bargain
The unit I have is designed for cars which spend long periods with the battery disconnected. Apparently the company have the highest recovery rate of any alarm on the market. Should do at that price mind you.
I'll check out your recommendations. With tracking device did you use with Global Telemetrics?

Thanks

I’m not sure what tracker they use but it’s all fitted out of view and will alert your phone when the car is moved. They can track it and let the police know where it is.
It also gives you battery condition and journey information, speed etc
Good service too
Free upgrade after 3 years ...all hardware swapped for new at no cost . All done by mobile fitter
Very happy with this

Well after some research I've found the same five year alarm package for £464. This is less than half the initial price I was quoted by the Tracker Company.
Not sure what business model they're using, probably the Dick Turpin version
I'll continue my search to see if I can get it any cheaper. It just shows you that you should never to accept a renewal without checking other options first.

Cheers

When I purchased my E in 2001 I purchased a Tracker unit which was fitted by a local specialist. I paid the one off fee. I was told that tracker would periodically check the signal.
I heard nothing from them until last month when I got a phone call from tracker saying that the internal battery voltage is low 5 to 6v was mentioned. Even though the car battery is connected and on a trickle charger.
A follow up e.mail states -

"Thank you for taking my phone call today, as discussed we would love to offer you a full unit replacement and the tracker in your vehicle is now 20 years old and technology has advanced majorly.

Please find a quote below for the new system and a link to the new model on our website.

- Replacement Monitor unit - £199"

I think I will take up this offer as I like the fact there is no subscription unlike others on the market.

Worth asking if you can get a this deal.

I bought one of Spytec's GL300 models which is dirt cheap. It does require a monthly activation fee priced according to how quickly you want the location refreshed when the tracker is moving. I went for the 30 second refresh which is perfectly adequate for my needs. The nice thing is you can deactivate and reactivate at any time that you choose (one month subscription when you do activate the unit). I keep it hidden away where I can't imagine that any thief would find it unless they knew it was on board and took a considerable amount of time looking for it. I just activate it when I take the car on an overnight trip; the rest of the time, the car is kept in a locked garage or in my field of view.

I have been thinking about this a bit and just need the input of someone who knows the missing piece I have overlooked.

A small "burner" mobile phone from a supermarket can be purchased with a "pay as you go" sim-card for £20.

It has a battery life of 24 hours+, an in built GSM card.

It could be secreted and hard wired into a car easily.

If I use the Sim card number (ICCID), free software exists somewhere to enable you to track the phone using the triangulation of cell masts, or the GSM card to an accuracy of 1m or so.

So why not just wire in a cheap mobile phone? If you car gets pinched you can go on the internet and track it for free?

I have never tried it.

Am I missing something?
Its true, but Enzo never said it

I do the same as you James, I put the burner phone on mute and hide it whenever I use the car.
The battery lasts forever when not being used as a phone.
Only problem is, it only requires a cheap blocker to hide the burner phones signal, but I feel anything is better than nothing.

Two problems with the phone idea:-

1. The signal can easily be jammed and I suspect the your local tea leaf has ready access to the necessary technology.
2.This will not work in areas of poor or no signal, for example an underground car park or shipping container.

The Tracker works on VHF and can be detected pretty much anywhere apparently. Hopefully I'll never have to put it to the test.

Cheers

+1 for Tracker.

They can also alert you if the vehicle is moving with ignition off. A great feature unless you've got something that is always breaking down.
