#1 Tracing an E-Type Series 3 for a friend

Post by grahamf900 » Mon Jan 22, 2024 9:12 am

Hi All

A friend of mine has asked if I can find out whether his old E-type is still in existence. The registration number on it the time he owned it was EPL 948J. |I've checked on the DVLA website and there's no record of the registration number so maybe it's been re-registered if it still exists.

I do have the chassis number which is P1R20523 and the engine number is 7R7418. It was first registered on 23rd Feb 1971 as a UK RHD car.

Many thanks for any help any of you might be able to provide.

Graham

Search by chassis/vin on xkedata.com, you might find it there, or other cars close to it.

Thanks Allrand

The chassis number I previously posted on here was not quite the right format (from looking at the Jaguar Heritage Trust records). It should have been 1R20523 which would make it a Series 2 RHD 4.2 FHC built in 1969, which the previous owner confirms as being correct. It was also finished in Regency Red.

Of course, it could have had a private plate, plus a colour change and maybe an engine swap since he owned it, so the only reliable identifier is going to be the chassis number.

I did a search on the XKE site, but it didn't turn up anything. Am I right in assuming that site will only show a match if someone who either owns or knows of the vehicle has entered it in the database?

Many thanks

Graham

The original chassis number quoted will not be wholly incorrect. The 'P' prefix denotes power-steering - relatively uncommon on a Series 2 car.

Late '69 (which from the chassis number will likely be right) to Feb '71 was a long time for the car to have sat around unsold

So how about entering on the database, with the owners permission of course.

Until we know whether the car exists or not and assuming it does still exist, it would premature to add it to the XKE database.

I might try to contact the Jaguar Drivers Club E-Type Registrar to see if they can help.

Many thanks.
