I use Adrian Flux. and pay ?102 per annum fully comp for 3500 miles. I pay an extra ?15 for agreed value, and ?46 extra for uk and european breakdown cover including get you home.
Good value I think, and friendly, but service could be better!

#44 AgreedValuation

Post by Tony » Mon Jun 23, 2014 11:47 pm

Renewed my insurance today and requested an agreed valuation of ?85,000. Sent them the pictures and was surprised when the valuation department rang me back to suggest I upped it to ?95,000.
Are these cars really going for that figure or is it just an Insurance valuation and not what the market will pay.

A report recently in a German magazine said E-Type prices have gone up 15% to 25% in the last year. My casual observation suggests a rise of about ?500/month and S1 3.8's are becoming very difficult to find as restoration projects or even for sale restored. If yours was a total write off do you think a) you would be able to rebuild it for ?85k and b) find another in similar condition to yours for that price? You are into S2 territory nowadays.

I was discussing this with Angus only yesterday and we concluded that the decreasing numbers of E-Type's turning up for the Prescott and JEC meetings this year is a reflection people are beginning to treat them as investments and don't want to drive them. The die hard enthusiasts are being left behind!

Seems a crime to me, an E-Type locked up in a garage and not being driven as it was meant to! Surely there's a chance in the future that values will fall like they have done in the past. There seems to be plenty for sale in various condition's. Or am I wrong and the E is becoming a rarity?

Not rare, desirable. Early Jaguar's are languishing under ?100k even for a fully restored XK120 because demand is low. Let's face it, which do you want to own?

Similar experience here. I asked Philip Porter to value my car, without saying what I thought the value to be. He suggested ?95,000 which was ?20,000 up on what CMC valued it at immediately post-restoration in 2010 and what it was currently insured for. I had suspected the value to have risen to around that level but wanted confirmation.

Swift call to Carole Nash and I've upped it to the new value - no fuss.

My secret ambition to copy David and have an FHC as well is receding rapidly, unless I compromise and go for an S2, a very nice example of which I'm working on presently assisting the owner with his EDIS installation.

I must admit that leaving a ?100k car in public car parks does cause me some anxiety but I'd rather that than not use it - may as well sell it and buy several cheaper classics if it ever came to that!

My OTS has been recently valued at ?100k, my FHC at ?130k. Even my Elan has gone up 50% in value in three years (Peter Day aka Daytune restored Elan's are in much demand). Angus is selling good running rust free LHD FHC S2's for ?45k and I personally think they are too cheap. On the other hand E-Type's have always been undervalued so maybe this is a price correction in relation to DB5's, DB6's, 300SL's and other semi exotica.

Similar story .Footman James after 20 years did not care to do anything about a ?370 premium. Peter James gave better cover for ?209

Just had a very unhelpful conversation with Footman James. I wanted to up the agreed value on my Lotus Elan so sent them pictures plus an independent valuation report. They responded asking for an additional ?55 which seemed fair until I realised more than half that was "administration fee and Insurance Premium Tax". Asked them if they could waive the admin charge but apparently this was "not possible". If I terminated the policy now, after 6 months, I would only be entitled to a refund of ?25-48. Seems if I had told them about the re-valuation within 30 days of renewal there would be no admin charge :? Like both My E-Type's I will be moving the Lotus insurance to Peter James next year because they are really helpful.

This saga continues. Just had a letter from Footman James telling me my insurer (Chaucer) want to cancel the policy on the Elan "because it is now under insured". Footman James can't do anything as "the system is down" and the lad I originally spoke to is "off today". Beggar's belief!

Insurance renewal quote arrived and is now up to ?365 with ?150 excess, an agreed valuation of ?95,000 and an annual milage of 3500. Rang around the usual suspects for comparison quote but all about the same price. Seem to be going up about ?50 per year. It will be interesting if I get a call again this year asking me to increase the agreed valuation for a fee of ?50?

#54 Insurance - a salutory lesson

Post by ernie » Thu Jul 23, 2015 6:52 am

Morning,
I recently cancelled an insurance policy on my Healey that was renewed only 2 months ago. The annual premium was ?150. I have just sold the car to free up funds to work on my S2 OTS and Landie.

The operator informed me that that there was no refund on the 10 months unexpired portion of the premium...as admin costs would be applied. I was expecting some costs but not over ?100.worth..I was going to get both cars insured with them, but no way after being treated like that.

So watch out if you get a quote from Carole Nash...or Chaucer
.I will be checking the policy small print more closely in the future on any policy, and as you can guess I wont ever be getting a quote from them in the future....

Don't bother with getting a classic policy with Brentacre. Not if you want to do something else for the rest of the day. The snotty-nosed yoof got most of the stuff wrong on the proposal form. They insist on seeing a copy of the new driving license that you have to get online requiring you to dig out your national insurance number. This is in addition to copies (bothsides) of the card license. Then they expect you to get some kind of professional valuer to sign off for the agreed value. Finally the complaints phone number is out of date -goes to another company.
Don't waste your time...

I don't bother with "classic insurers" anymore. I was with Adrian Flux and had all soprts of rubbish going on
I'm now on a multi car policy with Admiral. Brilliant. Unlike most insurers with multi-car arrangements, you don't have to insure them all at the same time. They agreed a price for our 3 cars, then just insured the first to need cover for 12 months. When renewal came up on the 2nd car, that was insured for c. 8 months so it tied in with the first car. The 3rd car (when required) was added for about 5 months. So now, all cars renew on the same date.
For my E Type (series 2 2+2, agreed value ?35k) the insurance was ?102 for the year, fully comp, with a named 2nd driver. I added full European breakdown and get you home cover for a further c. ?40. Agreed mileage is for 4,000 miles
And when you ring, someone answers.

Sounds good, Malcolm. I'll definately get a quote from Admiral for the Aston and my 1989 Merc.
I'll be ditching Brentacre, though. I just read in the 'jolly friendly help sheet (to give you piece of mind')... that they reserve the right to completely ignore your valuation when it comes to paying out, despite it being photographed and valued by a club official AND sent back to them. And if you don't like that..Well they still charge you ?45 'administraaaation...'.

Post by jonhall88 » Sun Oct 11, 2015 2:49 pm

I was with Footman James but found this year the price had doubled with no reasons being given. I have just insured with Admiral for ?147 that includes legal and protected no claims bonus, clean licence and 9 years plus ncb.
Ser 3 2+2 E type with only modifications being a wood steering wheel, a Thatcham 1 alarm / immobiliser and fossway remote bleed lines. Car was totally rebuilt some 10 yrs ago with all new panels / engine and gearbox the whole lot was done. Condition 1 in other words perfect
BUT
What is the value because I have sent off all rebuild phots and 8 phots of car and it does look superb, should say car is orig RHD manua,l wires and red
I have looked in 3 mags
1. values it at 30k
2. valued at 38k
3 valued at 45 to 60k

that's a hell of a price difference. I tend to look on prices Classic car ads and e bay for realistic prices

I will let you know what Admiral say the cars value is when they let me know

I posted this in the Series 3 section but I figured it is worth copying here.

Admiral seem to be aggressively targeting the classic car market with very attractive rates however they don?t seem to have thought it through.

My Porsche 911 is insured with Classicline, the renewal cost was ?270 for an agreed value of ?35k.

Admiral quoted ?160 plus ?16 to agree a value of ?45k (Porsche prices have gone silly!).

I was tempted but the problem with Admiral and their associated companies are that it isn?t a proper classic policy, so it doesn?t cover things like club events, track days, right to the salvage in a claim etc. The sales guy didn?t inspire me with any confidence that they understood classic cars.

So I went back to Classicline and they agreed to match the price and the new value, which was great.

Classicline for my S3 with agreed value of ?35k is ?110 by the way.

So I suppose I'm just saying that you need to be really clear what the policy covers and if its right for you.
