There are plenty of private investigators who will trace cars from just a registration number. I presume they have contacts who can access the police computer. Depends upon how much you want to find it though as it will obviously cost.

A local company to me wanted ?350 the last time I enquired about tracing a car and they said that if it was registered with the DVLA they could obtain the registered keeper's details. Probably best not to ask how they do it but I would suspect that most are ex-police who still have contacts. Not that I'm suggesting anything untoward of course, just my opinion!
Depends how much time and aggrovation you want to save :)

In the UK its dead easy for any registered company that is involved with law enforcement ie parking issues and fines etc to obtain access to the DVLA database.
Also you may not be aware but the DVLA sells its data to bodies that are not involved in the above industry....

The rules used to ensure that DVLA only provided information for the purposes of parking fines and traffic related enforcement etc.andrewh wrote:Who does it sell the information to then?
However in the last 18 months it has become apparent that they have relaxed the rules and now are less scrupulous about access to the database. Purchasers of data have gone from parking vehicle offences to companies that that are not involved in traffic nor parking and it appears that they have been the front for other purposes (criminal? ).
Needless to say the information Commissioner has put complaints in a queue, the Home Office is pleading that they didnt know and the Police are beginning to investigate...ohh and by the way despite the Information Commissioner telling the DVLA that if someone requests that their information is not revealed/ sold for no parking reasons...the DVLA ignore that.....that is how they increased their revenue in 1993 to more than ?10 million an increase of more than 400% in one year.

Bounce. Still trying to find my old V12. I find it hard to believe that it lives in the UK, is taxed and MOTd every year, is built in Lavender which is not everyones cup of tea but is very not noticeable but nobody has see it or knows where she is now. Come on chaps??? This is the E type forum! Someone must know my car? I harbour the hope of buying it back as I have the sister car bought by the same family at the same time, an XJ12 Series One. I was lucky to own both but sold the V12 E in a rash moment. Please help me find her!
As a matter of interest. Thats my Audi Quattro in the background. These photos where taken in 1987 in Broadway on the way back to London from Shropshire where the V12 lived. It was owned by a family friend from new and spent many years in Bridgnorth Motor Museum . The Audi was written off by a drunk driver whilst I was having dinner in a Fulham restaurant in 1988. I wonder whether it still exists D848GYP.

Andrew, I feel your pain! I sold my '65 FHC,1E30036, during a weak moment, at one of Moss Motors' parties in Santa Barbara back in 1998--sixteen years after dragging the car out of a back garden in bits. I found the car in Denmark about eight years later, but it was sold once again and it now resides in Germany or the Netherlands. I have dreams of trying to "unwind the clock" by finding it and buying it back. Someday...
