#1 'Petroliana On Location' - Christmas present?

Post by Heuer » Mon Oct 22, 2012 1:24 pm

If anyone is looking for a book to add to their Christmas list I can recommend this one. Alan Chandler has a huge collection of Petroliana (items relating to the retail of petrol through the ages) and this is his third and largest book. Fascinating reading for any petrolhead or if you are looking to add a few period enamel signs, globes or equipment to decorate your garage.

On the Christmas present theme this vintage look 'Tyre Service Kit' is available from Vintage Tyres:

They also offer a gear knob wine bottle stopper, car key USB stick, a range of reproduction vintage enamel signs and other ephemera.

Just had a chance to sit down and read through my copy of 'Petroliana - On Location' and I learnt something new on the very first page! Carless, Capel & Leonard operating at Hope Chemical Works, Hackney were the first company to generally use the word "Petrol" to refer to a light spirit created from the distillation of Petroleum (commonly referred to as paraffin or kerosene). In 1892 they started supplying their "Petrol" for the Daimler engines used by Simms Motor Launches. They vigorously defended their rights to the name 'Petrol' leaving other later suppliers to use the term 'Motor Spirit'. Carless also distributed a high quality fuel extracted from coal in the 1930's which helped reduce Britain's dependency on imported oil. This is the illuminated glass globe they used on top of their fuel pumps:

Unfortunately it is the only one known to exist but certainly a thing of great beauty.
