Was at the NEC Classic yesterday and visited the Pilkington stand. They had a complete set of Etype glass on display. The rear glass had the embedded heater and it was almost invisible.

Had a great chat with one of the guys there who confirmed that you can have the heater element option for about ?100 extra for the front or rear screen - seems a real bargain! Also, as previoulsy mentioned in this thread, they can add an FM earial in the front screen, although the guy there admitted that they have never done this as yet.

Cheers.

Yeah I saw (or rather nearly couldnt see) that.

Impressive.

I mentioned this thread to the chap I was talking to, and managed to come away with a T-shirt for my son.

#23 Similar issues on the Mk10

Post by pmansson » Thu Dec 03, 2015 11:12 pm

Sorry to deviate from the E-types, but the problem is the same on the Mk10/420G with its very wide screen. On 2 of them I have the original screen, which after a repaint were reinstalled with new rubber seals and old chrome surrounds. The fit is absolutely perfect. On the third one, I changed the glass back in 1988 and the seal and esp chrome surrounds have never fitted as they should. This is due to the 1988 newly manufactured glass which is slightly, slightly wider, which means that the rubber seal does not sit 100% into the body and hence the chrome surrounds are forced upwards and will not stay inside the rubber lip of the seal. They only have the inner lip and glue to tie them down. The smaller saloons had a narrower chrome surround which is secured by outer and inner rubber lip (and some glue perhaps).
Bottom line is: the original windscreens fit better than the new ones. Pity as I love to have absolutely clear glass and not 50 year old ones with millions of tiny marks in the glass. This shows esp at night and with a low sun against you.

Just so I can cry myself to sleep at night Peder, how many Jags do you have? I knew multiple E and XK and I think MkIX, but three Mk10/420G? Surely some Series XJ? Mk1 & Mk2? I think you must have more Jags than several smaller export markets!

Peder, that is exactly the problem we were having with a S2 FHC. The new glass tries to break free at the bottom and we haven't bothered to try and fit the chromes. The original glass has tighter radii at the bottom which should overcome this issue. I have a new glass on order being made to my original shape so will report back in due course.

Out of interest, have the new drop glasses arrived with you yet, and if so what's your impression of them?

Angus has successfully fitted the new windscreen and Pilkington Classic has issued the following new part numbers:
Image
CL= clear; GN = green
You can contact Nick Gardiner directly if you want to order one or do so via a Pilkington Classic supplier: Nick.gardiner@NSG.Com

The period Triplex logo was in the correct place. Angus did find that one rubber seal he had in stock, from an unknown source, made fitting difficult. A known source seal (from Hutsons) fitted perfectly however so be aware all seals are not created equal!

Although I have not fitted my drop glass as yet it looks to be a superb product with a discrete Triplex logo rather than the hideous white 'Uroglass' makings on the currently fitted ones.

Also, keep in mind when ordering that Pilkington can provide this screen with a heating element bonded into the glass. This is approximately ?100 extra.

I'm planning on ordering this option and then not fitting the demist tubes.

Does anyone have an idea of the current draw on the element as fitted to an E-Type screen?

It's nowhere near that. The guy on the Pilkington stand did tell me but I can't exactly remember. I think it was about 4 amps and it is all about the size of the screen (and subsequent element).

Give Pilkington a ring and ask. If you find out post back to the forum as others (me) may like to know.

Cheers.

On the basis that the Heuer seal of approval is good enough for me :D I've gone ahead and ordered a pair of door glasses today.

Have to say that Nick Gardiner was very easy to deal with. Thumbs up for service so far!

I have just ordered a windscreen via Nick Gardiner who was very helpful.
Many thanks to Angus & David for getting the problems sorted out.

Pim

You can order via Nick Gardiner - they ship to your nearest distribution centre and on to you. Mine went to Redditch before coming to me.

Nick referred me to the Dutch branch. If this doesn't work out I'll try ordering and paying in the UK and shipping to the Rotterdam branch, which is 5 miles from here.

Good news is my windscreen is on its way to me, Nick has been great at keeping me updated on its progress in their factory.
They are also three weeks sooner than quoted another bonus .
If the fit is as good as their customer service I will be very happy.
Neal.
