Removable steering wheel

Hi Steve,
That sounds more like the kind of money these things ought to cost - I couldn't see where £400 plus went.
As I am working on the dash and trim right now, the wheel is constantly getting in my way - so is there any reason why those exact same parts wouldn't go onto my 1962 S1 ?

Hi Rory.....as far as im aware the only difference with your S1 is that you have the horn push comming up through the center colum.....on my S2 its on the end of tne indicator stalk........the quick release i used does have contact built in.....so it would take some fettling to get yuor horn to work if anyone could get it to work im sure your the man.......ive been following all tne work youve been doing

I have just fitted the Superspoke on my 63 FHC , and there is only a problem with their "insulator" part (4) which protect the horn rod . If i fit it , i can't push the horn button, it is already pushed by screwing the insulator . I must cut the threaded shaft so i'll have enough room to push the button. I Wonder if it is correct.....

Hi Yves....you need to contact Superspoke.......on there video it just shows screwing the insulator on....no mention of having to cut anything

I have contacted STEVE at Superstoke , he said to not fit the insulator..... but then the horn rod is very exposed and can be damaged when you put or take out the steering wheel

Steve, to fit the NRG adapter what adaptation did you actually have to do ? You mention filing etc - is the result "elegant" or not ?! Am I right in thinking that the original Jaguar mounting system between the steering column and the alloy "tube" I can see behind the steering wheel is left in place, and that the QR assembly and the adapter ring you mention are then "added" in-between the alloy tube and the actual steering wheel ? Much obliged. R

Hi Yves.....in there vidio they show fitting one to a S3 with the center horn push.....they then mention that on early cars the horn posh part is more fragile and to fit the insulator.......are they telling you there system is not compatabke with S1 cars........you need to push things with Suoerspoke

Hi Rory.....yes the quick release and the adaptor ring fit between the steering wheel and the original hub (alloy tube).....the exact parts i used are listed a few posts back (NRG quick release and adaptor ring).....the ring is aluminium with a black coating, i sanded off the outside rim coating and polished it.....the inside i filled just a tiny bit off so the quick release fitted right in without catching (about 1mm off the inner edge).... also re drill the hub and steering wheel..also the lip on tne hub that fits into tbe center hole of the steering wheel has to be redeced in height by fileing off about 2mm....if you want any more photos pm your email and will send them

Hi Rory.....when i refer to the hub, im talking about the aliminium cylinder that on an E type is rivited to the steering wheel, this hub then fits on the splines of the steering shaft and bolted on......if a replacement steering wheel has ever been fitted then the rivets are normaly drilled out and replaced with nuts and bolts, however new rivets could have been used.....the quick release i used fits between this hub and steering wheel....i did not tap the holes....the whole job took about 1 hour so no major work....


This is the hub with the adaptor ring fitted....the outside has the black coating polished off and you can see the small amount of filing required on the inside(if you look close some of the black did not need filing of)...the adaptor has many holes which do not match up with the existing holes in the hub....so i drilled 6 new holes on the hub...the bolts fit into recessed holes in the ring and nuts fitted on the rear.....the quick release comes apart, one half bolts straight on the adaptor which has threaded holes......the other half fits to the wheel, but you need to drill the holes in the wheel to line up with it........hope this helps........if you look back at the other photos i posted all should become clear........however please post back if you have any more questions

The link to the NRG product you used, Funky something or other, doesn’t hook up any more, and I expect the products have changed over the years.

Would you be able to identify the NRG hub that you used, or would use if you were doing it again, please ?

Hi Rory... both links still work for me...it takes you to funky power then you search on their site...but here is a link direct to the NRG slim units on their site...also the ebay link to the spacer still works....the NRG slim is the only one iv used and can reccomend...there are units on ebay that look exactly the same but very cheap...they are obviously cheap copies...I went to funkey power as they are an importer for NRG.

Only stock available is "Carbon Fibre" for an extra 20 quid, feeling too tight today to waste money on something I'll just bead-blast off as soon as it's out of the box, so it can be a project to go on the back-burner ............
