Hi guys, I bought this e type S2 OTS with a factory hard top, it was a full restoration. It did not have a soft top with it no frame nothing. Over the last 18mknths I acquired a frame and canopy along with all the other bits.
Now for the best bit..
upon fitting the frame into the car I can not get it to close when the stabiliser bar is bolted into the lower bolt hole in the B post..
All this part of the car is original, I’m wondering if the frame which was sold to me as an original is infact a copy..
Any idea how to tell the difference? (Apart from one will fit and one won’t!)
I note the welding of the brackets on the frame are mig welded, now I’m wondering if an original would have been gas welded.
Got this booked in at Suffolk and Turley, dont want a wasted 2 hour trip there to be told the frames no good.
Of course it could have been disassembled over the years and put back in correctly, I’ve posted a couple of pics that show the hood and as far as it get to closing (bottom pic), With the stabiliser bolt in place, the bottom pic shows a good inch gap to its location when the hood is up, puzzling!

Paul, a search for “hood” in Restoration Stories gave quite a few hits. One here on post 129 could help you

Look at other search results in the same section to hopefully find other photos.

Thanks Geoff, there were some good pics on that post upon checking those pics with the pics of mine they look the same, albeit mine has the extra bar in it as it’s a S1 frame.
I’m back to the same dilemma in that is it original item or a copy from which I’ve been told are a challenge at best (nothing new here then!)
Any ideas how to tell ?

Hi Paul,
Firstly, you are quite correct in that the frame you have is an S1 item and not a frame for your S2 car. Whether the mounting points are different on the S2 compared to the S1 I’m not sure, but probably the same.
So presumesbly, it’s not a question about originality (as it’s obviously not) but simply how do you get it to fit?
If you undo the stabiliser links, is it then able to close? If it is, you could adjust the lower or center hole to fit.
Here are some pics of the S2 hood I recently fitted. It is slightly different to the S1 frame but might help.

Thanks for the pics very useful..
I’m answer to your question when the stabiliser bar is not connected the hood does shut and close, I suppose I could easily drill another location hole but 2 wrongs don’t make it right..
Many thanks

Simon that pic you posted turned out very valuable indeed..my frame had the stabiles bars on the wrong sides.. i.e the n/s and o/s were on the wrong sides if you look at the pics it’s easy to see the curvature was incorrect on mine. I swapped them over and now it opens and shuts perfect. This frame had NEVER been apart, I had to drill out the rivet to dismantle so was clearly made with this error..
Thought I’d post this to maybe help another should this problem (unlikely) arise to another..
