Cam Cover sealing...again
#41 Re: Cam Cover sealing...again
Barnwell have sent me a sample (right) of the self-centreing version of Geoff's 1/4" Dowty-type washers, and they look perfect in that there are two distinct functions addressed, such that their grip around the thread is more snug than the basic version (left), which can't do any harm, see picture.
Reference MBSC45-004 NBR (MILD Steel) - looks like a zinc plated finish.
They're 60p each for orders under 50 pieces, but get a lot cheaper in quantities, so if anyone wants them then I'll happily post 22 of them in exchange for £6, while stocks last.
Just send me a PM.
I don't believe they'll solve anything like this
but they feel like they'd probably work with this
and will of course be perfect on good seatings like these

Now have them to send out, available at cost, £4.82 for 22 plus letter post, call it £6 all in, to anywhere you like - compares well with £15.84 plus postage if you were to buy 22 direct.
Yves (Polse7317) in La Rochelle has fixed a rather generous Euro-conversion at 10€ but I think that includes a generous beer tax .

Hi Rory,
While I have to confess that I have no issues yet with the copper ones, I would be happy to grab two sets to put on the shelf for next cam setting session.
Dropping you a pm.
All the best,

Sorry lads, aka Geoff and Tony, David Muir got the last set, posted Friday.
So the ten sets I bought have all gone.
Will put up the Barnwells contact details and confirm the reference so that if anyone else wants to become a washer distributor they have all they need.
Note that I am not charging a fee for passing on the franchise !
Actually, it might help if we waited to see whether they work..... could one of my customers give feedback ?

OK, reference is : MBSC45-004 NBR Self Centering Bonded
I ordered 220 and paid £48.22 including VAT and postage within UK.
My contact was doug.bane@barnwell.co.uk
First feedback from a Usual Suspect who has been using the same ones but of a less-appropriate size :
Fitted them today and can see the snugger fit on the threads. Maybe the calibration of my hand needs checking but I felt they needed a slightly greater torque to do up, very much an impression and the torque is still very low, just a light hand-tight tweak with a 1/4 inch ratchet/socket.
Not sure how soon I can get a decent run in to test them but see no reason to think they'll do any worse than mine, which are leak free.
For your information mine have been on for the best part of four years and have been on and off several times. Today two showed signs of delamination which is the first time and they were still lovely and clean on the head so doing the job.

Only about 50 miles done with these newer ones but the cam covers are spotlessly clean with no leaks/weeping at the nuts. I've used the version shown in post 41 for four years and the cam covers have had no leaking from the washers/nuts.
A good upgrade and the steel finish looks better (IMHO) against the cam covers.
We must have been posting at the same time, Rory . My comments still stand

What's the consensus on sealing cam covers - dry or with sealant? I have new Cometic gaskets, half-circle seal for the tacho drive side, o-ring for the blanking plug on the exhaust bank and new copper washers. I've had advice to assemble with oil, blue hylomar and red heat-resistant silicone and heard the arguments for and against these and tried them all with various degrees of success.

NO sealant with Cometic gaskets other than a very small dab at the loose ends near the tach generator. Cometics will not leak if the gasket surfaces are true.

I use non setting gasket goo, smeered very lightly on both surfaces of the gasket. Then I nip up the nuts until screwdriver tight. Lastly I tighten the lower row of nuts gradually, then the upper row. The nuts are never very tight and can be undone easily.
That sorts the gaskets and prevents them from leaking. The copper washers need to be annealed before reusing. I heat them until they are glowing cherry red, then let them cool. They can also be drenched if in a hurry.
